On Friday at Yale University, rain prevented outdoor play, so the semifinals of the Pilot Pen Open, were moved indoors to the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. Inside, last year's tourney champion, 19-year-old 2nd-seeded #8 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark (residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco), defeated 27-year-old 3rd-seeded #10 Flavia Pennetta of Italy (residence: Verbier, Switzerland) 6-4, 6-1 (photo shown).

Caroline said: "I’m used to playing indoors. But we were waiting around all day, and it’s always hard to wait. You never know if it’s going to stop raining or not, or if you’re going to go. I was here at 9:30 a.m., so it was a pretty long day. But I’m happy that I won, and that’s the most important thing." NHR story - HC story

Flavia said: "I didn’t serve very well today. It’s a little bit different playing indoor to outdoor. The ball was always really near my head, I didn’t jump at all today. I think [Caroline] played a good match, she was very forward and very aggressive. I had my chances, but I didn’t make it...
"[Playing indoors] was different. But it was the same for everyone today. It was a difficult day for everyone — for us, for the tournament director, the crowd. It’s not easy to handle this type of thing."

Also on Friday in New Haven, 23-year-old # 34 Elena Vesnina from Sochi, Russia, defeated 30-year-old 8th-seeded #16 (and former # 1) Amelie Mauresmo of France (residence: Geneva, Switzerland), 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 (photo shown).

Elena said: "I talked to my coach after the first set and he told to just focus on getting my serve in. I had trouble with my serve, I was so inconsistent and double faulted. In that first set [Amelie] played me like I was a pussy cat. In the second set I was more aggressive and changed my serve." NHR story

Amelie said: "[Elena] played a really good third set, coming up at the end of each rally with a big winner on the line or in the corner. Probably I was maybe a little less precise on the placements. But I thought I did O.K."

Elena will play Caroline in the New Haven final on Saturday. Caroline leads Elena 2-1 in career matches; they are 1-1 on hardcourts. The forecast calls for more rain.

Caroline is 5-5 in previous WTA singles finals; she won the Eastbourne and Ponte Vedra Beach titles this year, and reached the finals at Madrid, Charleston, Memphis & Bastad. Caroline has a 55-17 match record this season.

Elena is 0-1 in previous WTA singles finals; she reached her first final at Auckland early this year, after defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals. She has won 2 ITF singles titles, and 3 WTA (plus 6 ITF) doubles titles. Elena has a 30-16 match record in 2009, the best year of her career.

Rogers Cup, Toronto, CAN PREMIER 5 $2,000,000 56m/48q/16d outdoor: hard
Live Scores | draws: WTA - tourney | interviews | photos: Y!: sports - news | WTA

On Sunday in Toronto, in the final of the Rogers Cup (aka the Canadian Open), 27-year-old 4th-seeded #4 Elena Dementieva of Russia (residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco), defeated 22-year-old #49 (and former #1, working her way back up the rankings after a prolonged shoulder injury) Maria Sharapova of Russia (residences: Manhattan Beach, California and Bradenton, Florida), 6-4, 6-3 (both ladies are shown during the match, and Elena with the "transparent racket" trophy afterward).

Elena's prize is $350,000; Maria's is $175,000—and her performance raised Maria's WTA ranking to #30, which means she will be seeded at this year's US Open (Aug 31).

The two sets lasted over two hours. Both players served just one ace; Maria committed 10 double faults, Elena, 7. Maria converted only 3 of 7 break point opportunities against Elena; Elena scored on 5 of 15 break points against Maria.

Elena said: "This kind of win gives you a lot of confidence, so right now it's all about recovering and getting ready for New York... I really like to play this tournament, but I've never done anything better than first or second round, which was very disappointing for me. Every time I come I have such great crowd support. I just feel so happy to finally win this title. It means a lot to me." AP story

It was the first final Maria has reached since returning to play in May after a long injury layoff. Maria said: "I think it was a really great week for me. Playing six matches was great leading up to the U.S. Open. I think this was really good preparation."

Maria leads still Elena 8-3 in career matches, and won their previous two meetings: on a hardcourt in the Los Angeles quarterfinals in 2007, 6-3, 6-4, and in the 4th round of the 2008 Australian Open, 6-2, 6-0. Elena's last win over Maria had been in 2006, in the semis in LA, 7-5, 6-2.

2008 Olympic gold medalist Elena is now 14-14 in WTA singles finals; she won the Auckland and Sydney titles earlier this year. Elena has a 50-13 match record in 2009.

2004 Wimbledon, 2006 US Open, and 2008 Australian Open champion Maria is now 19-8 in WTA singles finals. Due to right shoulder rotator cuff tendon tears, she played only one match (a doubles match) between August, 2008, and May, 2009. She says that her shoulder has now completely healed, and her results seem to indicate that it has. Maria has a 22-7 match record this season.

  Tennis Photos & Tennis TV:

Yahoo! US and ESPN news photo searches are located at the top of every page at tennis.quickfound.net. The same 304x345 pic at Yahoo! US is 452x512 at ESPN and 397x450 at the France & UK Yahoos (but Yahoo! includes Reuters, AFP, and some other agency pics which ESPN does not).
Yahoo! news photos are kept on the server for 30 days (ESPN: 15 days). The Yahoo! link above is now is now to the new Yahoo! Sports tennis photo gallery, which might not find all of the photos. If you are looking for more, try the individual player names, or the name of the tourney, or the city it is in, with the search form below (or try the international Yahoo! links, below).
Yahoo! Sports now includes some much larger photos than before from AFP (Agence France-Presse), either 660 or 800 pixels in their largest dimension. Unfortunately, these larger images cannot currently be accessed via the usual Yahoo! News photo search. You have to browse through the Yahoo! Sports tennis photo gallery to find them, or, alternatively, search for a player profile at Yahoo! Sports, then click on the "Photos" link at their profile page, to get the pics. Only the AFP pics are extra large, and not all of them.
The Tennis.com Photo Gallery, new in 2006, displays mostly the same AP photos as ESPN, with the same quality and size (512 px max), and is, unfortunately, not searchable.

Yahoos! of other nations sometimes include photos not shown on US Yahoo! Also, the UK Yahoo! includes some photos (from the EMPICS agency) that are over 30 days old, unlike the other Yahoos!. The Yahoo links below are category links, instead of keyword links, so if you just want to see all tennis photos click on the links instead of using the search form.

CBS Sportsline: Tennis News Photos carries tennis news photos from Getty Images that are not available from Yahoo! or ESPN, plus the same AP pics.   Sports Sites' Tennis News Pages:

CNN-Sports Illustrated: Tennis covers tennis with AP (and sometimes Reuters) stories. Occasionally the stories have a mid-size photo or two, but not as many as they used to, and the pics are no longer linked to large versions.

BBC Sport: Tennis reduced the length of most stories in 2005. They often have small photos, but never large ones. They also have an online Tennis Academy.

CBS Sportsline.com: Tennis coverage is basically AP, but you have to find photos on a separate page (listed above).

ESPN: Tennis is basically AP; they have improved their layout & navigation.

Tennis.com did a complete makeover of their website in 2005--and did it again in 2006--and Chrissie forgot to call and tell me the URLs had changed both times. The site has statistics, feature stories, results, events information, and hundreds of excellent tennis instruction articles and tips from the publishers of Tennis Magazine.
You can search the very useful feature article, "Your Game" instruction, and message board forum sections of the Tennis.com website with this form. Try to be specific--if you simply search for "backhand" you will get countless results, all the articles in which the word "backhand" is used.

"The 700-year-old French game of tennis, traditionally as much a lady's as a man's game, was introduced to the U.S. in 1874 by a woman, Mary E. Outerbridge..."

TIME Magazine, May 23, 1955:
In her first column, the San Diego Union's new Women's Sports Editor Maureen ("Little Mo") Connolly, retired as the world's greatest lady tennis star at a ripe old 21, showed that sports punditry is as easy for her as smashing a tennis ball down an opponents throat.
Lamented Little Mo in great pontifical style: "[On] the American scene today ... we're reducing sports to a cluster of numbers on a board ... We ... are expecting our champions to be stadium automatons, the human equivalents of the balls in a super pinball machine ... We're watching for the numbers to light up and forgetting the play."

Monica in Newport, July 11
(July 11, 2009) Former WTA # 1 Monica Seles was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame today. ESPN story
35-year-old Monica formally announced her retirement from pro tennis in 2008. Monica had a 595-122 won-lost record in singles, and won 53 WTA singles titles, 6 WTA doubles titles, and $14,891,762 in prize money.
Despite a 2-year gap in her career (after she was stabbed in the back by a fan in Germany in 1993), Monica won 9 Grand Slam singles titles, beginning with the 1990 French Open, and ending with the 1996 Australian Open.
Monica was still ranked in the top 10 in 2003 when she was forced to stop playing by a left foot stress fracture which never healed properly (the same type of injury that led the chronic back pain which prevents Anna Kournikova from playing).

1996 book excerpt: Monica, by Monica Seles

(May 6, 2009) The London Daily Mail on Tuesday published excerpts from a recent interview with former WTA # 1 Justine Henin. Although she has no intention of returning to the WTA Tour, Justine said: "‘I’m going to start to play again because I’ve planned a few exhibitions for the end of the year. I didn’t hit at all in the past few months. I had surgery on my right knee, so I’ve been off for a few months now. So I’m going to start a little bit—not because I want to, but just to keep the contact with the ball, and be okay when I’m on court for the exhibitions."
About her compatriot Kim Clijsters plans to return to WTA play later this year, Justine said: "If she feels she has to do it, then it’s the right decision... I wish her the best, for sure. It’s tough but she has the courage and the personality." London Daily Mail story

(Mar 26, 2009) Retired former WTA # 1 Kim Clijsters announced today that she will return to the WTA Tour in August. 2005 US Open champion Kim has requested (and will receive) wild cards for this Summer's hardcourt tourneys in Cincinnati and Toronto, and for the 2009 US Open. Kim had previously scheduled exhibition matches against Steffi Graf (May 17 at Wimbledon) and Michaella Krajicek (June 14 during the Ordina Open), and will also play 2 dates of World Team Tennis. Kim retired two years ago, citing primarily that she was tired of the frequent injuries she incurred on the WTA Tour.

Kim said: "I have missed playing tournaments most. I am doing it for the challenge. I have been training for 11 or 12 weeks. Training harder than ever before. Then this drive came back...
"When I started preparing for the Wimbledon game with Steffi Graf I felt this drive. I wanted a new challenge. This is just for fun for now to see if I can do it. I don't need to be number one again. I have done that and I don't need to do it again. I am just going to see how things evolve...
"I train six days a week, half of which is building up stamina and physique. I am really looking at (my) weak points to prevent injuries." AP story - Reuters story

(Mar 25, 2009) Women's Tennis Association CEO Larry Scott is leaving the WTA in June, after six years of running the organization. Scott will become Pac-10 Conference commissioner on July 1. A successor has not yet been named. AP story

(Mar 2, 2009) YouTube video: Maria Sharapova practicing at Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, Bradenton, Florida, on Monday, Mar 2, 2009. Maria is reportedly flying from Florida to California (where she will hopefully be ready to compete in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells) on Saturday, March 7.     (Dec 14, 2008) Former WTA # 12 Tatiana Golovin will not play in the 2009 Australian Open due to ongoing back pain and inflammation at the "sacrospinalis-iliac crest".
In the French magazine L'Equipe in November, 2008, Tatiana said: "As I haven’t played for almost one year, it is easy to say : 'Golovin is going to retire.' I can tell you now that it is not the case. I still have pain in my back, I don’t practice, but I am still totally hopeful to play again soon. It will be in a few weeks, months or even in one year, but my career is not over."
Tatiana had surgery on March 12, 2008 to remove a cyst that was causing pain. While the doctors had the hood open, they decided to remove her appendix as well, just to be on the safe side. Tatiana hoped to be playing again by the French Open. Tatiana played one complete match at the German Open, then withdrew, one by one, from each subsequent tourney, as she never quite reached playable condition. golovin-attitude.com

(Oct 2, 2008) Former WTA # 1 Maria Sharapova is out for the rest of the season due to a torn right shoulder rotator cuff tendon. On her website, Maria said: "I've been progressing really well, but the recovery is taking a lot longer than I had selfishly planned. Therefore, my team and I decided to `shut it down' for the season."
On August 1 Maria withdrew from the 2008 US Open as well as from the Beijing Olympics due to the injury. Maria had been unknowingly playing with the tendon torn since April.
Maria had withdrawn from the Rogers Cup in Montreal on July 30 after aggravating the ongoing right shoulder injury while defeating # 58 Marta Domachowska, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2.

Maria had an MRI scan on Thursday, July 31, which disclosed two small tendon tears in her shoulder. On her official website on Friday, Aug 1, Maria said: "Well my 24 hour medical tour came to an end yesterday after I met [in New York] with Dr. David Altchek who is the premier shoulder doctor in the world. He looked at all my tests from April and today and informed me that I have been playing with a moderate tear in my rotator cuff tendon since April. He actually couldn't believe that I've been playing this long with this injury. You can imagine that I was not very thrilled to hear that my medical team did not see this tear in my shoulder back in April.
"The good news is that it didn't get much worse since April but we could have started the healing time back then instead of now. He does not believe that I need surgery and is sending me to work with a specialist in Arizona next week to do extensive rehab and strength work and he believes that I should be ready to play in 2-3 months."

Maria has struggled with right shoulder problems for over three years. In a newsletter from her website dated July 29, Maria said: "[After Wimbledon] I spent many hours of each day working with Prince on different rackets and string. Ever since Indian Wells and that backhand incident, I haven't been able to get my arm up and close to my head without some sort of impingement and grinding... so I've been trying different rackets with different weight balances that are a bit more flexible and the strings looser to get as much tension away from my arm as possible.
"So for the last week I have been playing with a new frame...I'm usually very sensitive to any minor changes and we usually do this in the off season, but we really had no choice this time. Apart from that I spent a good ten or so days concentrating on my fitness and in the last week been playing a few practice matches etc."

(Aug 28, 2006 updated 1/2007) # 4 Maria Sharapova has signed a new racquet endorsement contract with Prince which will pay her around $25 million dollars over the next 10 years. Maria's previous deal with Prince, a five-year contract, was signed when she was 14 years old, and due to expire. Maria currently uses Prince's O3 White model. The deal includes a base pay, plus incentives for high rankings and tournament performance.
Maria also has endorsement contracts with Gatorade & Tropicana, Colgate - Palmolive, Motorola (expired in 2007), Parlux Fragrances, Canon, watchmaker TAG Heuer, Land Rover, Nike, and others, plus Japan-only deals with Honda & Pepsi, which make her the highest-paid female athlete in the world, earning an estimated $23 to $25 million a year.

(Jan 5, 2005) The WTA has made a 6-year deal with mobile phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson to become the primary WTA Tour global sponsor. The price? $88 million.

(Jan 6, 2004 revised) Wimbledon will have a new retractable roof for Centre Court in place in 2009, officials announced. Construction will begin after The Championships in July, 2006. The 2007 Championships will be played with no roof at all (the current partial roof removed), a new fixed partial roof will be in place in 2008, and the retractable roof completed in 2009. The roof will take 10 minutes to deploy, so Centre Court rain delays of up to 30 minutes will still be possible, but the roof is being installed to assure TV networks of almost continuous coverage, even if it rains. The arena's capacity will also be increased from 13,800 to 15,000.
