(Jan 29, 2009) The WTA has upgraded the Warsaw Open to a $600,000 "Premier" level event, and moved it to May 18, the spot formerly occupied by the Berlin German Open, the week preceding the French Open at Roland Garros. WTA story
The WTA has also placed 2 more "International" level ($220,000) events on the calendar, reinstating the Gastein Ladies in Bad Gastein, Austria (July 20, Tamira Paszek is expected to play) and adding the Andalucia Tennis Experience in Marbella, Spain (April 6; Serena Williams, Jelena Jankovic, and Anabel Medina Garrigues are expected to play).
(Jan 14, 2009) The AP has reported that the Berlin German Open, which in recent years was sponsored by Qatar Telecom and run by the Qatar Tennis Federation, has been removed from the WTA schedule due to the lack of a sponsor. AP story

(Oct 12-21, 2008 revised) WTA # 2 Dinara Safina and other top players are concerned about new rules for the 2009 WTA Tour schedule. The new rules make play in the four $4.5 million tourneys mandatory for all who qualify by rank (Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid & Beijing, in addition to the four Grand Slams, already mandatory), while also demanding that high-ranked players also play in four of the five $2 million tourneys (Canada, Dubai, Rome, Cincinnati & Tokyo PPO).
But players are complaining that the new rules also limit the number of high-ranked players who can compete in the lower-payout tourneys.
After her loss in the Kremlin Cup semifinals, Dinara said: "If they [WTA] don't listen to what we have to say, we might even choose to boycott the new Tour... There are a lot of grey areas. No one seems to understand which tournaments you can play and which you can't."
Svetlana Kuznetsova said: "I was told only two players from the top 10 could enter a smaller tournament like the Kremlin Cup next year. What if [No. 1-ranked] Jelena Jankovic and Serena or Venus [Williams] want to play here? Then all the top Russian players, and there are five of us in the top 10, will not be able to play in their home tournament. That's nonsense."
ESPN reported on Sunday, Oct 12 that "a WTA Tour official said the Kremlin Cup can receive unlimited top players under the new plan." But clearly the new rules are not clear to the players and media at this time. ESPN-Reuters story
At Linz on Oct 21, # 4 Ana Ivanovic said: "We do have our voice and we have to come together... The changes were made in the middle of the season and when you're playing grand slams you don't really want to think about next year's schedule. Many players probably didn't look deep into it and kind of let it go, and all of a sudden you're there with the change so it's a little bit hard. We're all in the same position so we have to talk more between us...
"I think it's good that tournaments will have guaranteed players, and week after week have top players competing against each other. I think that's good for women's tennis. But on us individually it's tough to say what impact it's going to have." Reuters story
Also at Linz, # 10 Agnieszka Radwanska said: "After the new rules with the WTA, I don't want to be top 10, because the rules are so bad and everything is for the WTA. I cannot play the small tournaments and it's quite bad. I hate these rules. I can play just two small tournaments a year.
"We're all saying this, but the WTA is doing everything for themselves, for the sponsors, but they don't realise we have to choose where we want to play and not want to play."
