Despite having a realtively low speed serve (101mph fastest, 92mph average 1st, 74mph avg 2nd), Francesca won 88% of her 1st serve points. Anastasia reached break point against Francesca only once, and could not convert it; Francesca scored on 4 of the 7 break points she held against Anastasia. Francesca struck 13 winners with 14 unforced errors (1 double fault), Anastasia hit only 5 winners, with 29 errors (4 DFs). match stats Francesca said: "It's very special. I'm very lucky to play so well again in a tournament like this. I feel better with my touch." AFP story - postmatch interview Anastasia had to call the trainer to treat her right shoulder, which has been troubling her since last month in Cincinnati. The pain has now spread to elbow; she hopes it will heal with rest. AP story Also on Saturday at Flushing Meadows, the 2000 & 2001 US Open champion (and 5-time Wimbledon champ), 30-year-old 3rd-seeded #4 (and former #1) Venus Williams from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, defeated the 2009 champ in Guangzhou & Tashkent, 22-year-old 16th-seeded #18 (career-high: #15) Shahar Peer from Maccabim, Israel, 7-6(3), 6-3 (photo shown). Venus fired the fastest serve of the tourney so far, 127mph, and averaged 111mph on 1st serve and 87mph on 2nd serve (Shahar: 103mph fastest, 92mph avg 1st, 79mph avg 2nd). Venus won 81% of her 1st serve points; Shahar, 48%. Venus broke Shahar's serve on 5 of 14 opportunities; Shahar converted 3 of the 6 break points she held against Venus. match stats The win raised Venus's record against Shahar to 6-0. Venus said: "Winning the first set always feels good, instead of having to regroup and figuring out how you're going to win the match." AP story - postmatch interview Shahar said: "Every time I played Venus I had tough time, and she was always kind of killing me every match [smiling.] So today was much closer match, and I think I'm playing better. I just need to take it to the end of the year also, because I don't think I played very well the last couple of weeks. So I think it's good for me, this performance of this week." postmatch interview Venus will play Francesca in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Venus leads Francesca 7-0 in career matches. They have met twice this year. In January, on a Plexipave hardcourt in the 4th round of the Australian Open, Venus defeated Francesca 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. And in May, on red clay in the 3rd round in Madrid, Venus won again in a similar fashion, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. In the 4th round on Monday, last year's US Open finalist (and the champion the past two weeks in Montreal and New Haven), 20-year-old top-seeded #2 (career-high: also #2) Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark (residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco), will play the 2006 US Open champ, (and this year's champ in Strasbourg and Memphis), 23-year-old 14th-seeded #16 (and former #1) Maria Sharapova of Russia (residences: Manhattan Beach, CA & Bradenton, FL). Caroline and Maria played only twice before, and have not met since 2008, when, on a Deco-Turf hardcourt in the quarterfinals in Doha, Qatar, Maria defeated Caroline 6-0, 6-1. Later that year, on red clay in the 3rd round in Rome, Maria won again, 6-4, 7-6(3). Maria is 29-8 this season, with losses to Maria Kirilenko, Jie Zheng, Lucie Safarova, Justine Henin, Na Li, Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, and Kim Clijsters. Caroline is 44-14 this season, with losses to Na Li (twice), Shahar Peer, Jelena Jankovic, Justine Henin, Vera Zvonareva, Lucie Safarova, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, Alona Bondarenko, Jie Zheng, Francesca Schiavone, Aravane Rezai, Petra Kvitova, and Marion Bartoli. Maria said: "[Caroline] can run all day and get a lot of balls back and make you hit tons of balls. She changes the pace really well, and gets her opponents off balance. She does many things well. That's why she's at the top of the game." The tennis.quickfound.net US Open tourney page holds 195 choice photos from this year's US Open, cropped & enhanced, and 32 postmatch quotes. Sports Sites' Tennis News Pages:CNN-Sports Illustrated: Tennis covers tennis with AP (and sometimes Reuters) stories. Occasionally the stories have a mid-size photo or two, but not as many as they used to, and the pics are no longer linked to large versions.BBC Sport: Tennis reduced the length of most stories in 2005. They often have small photos, but never large ones. They also have an online Tennis Academy. CBS Sportsline.com: Tennis coverage is basically AP, but you have to find photos on a separate page (listed above). ESPN: Tennis is basically AP; they have improved their layout & navigation. Tennis-Specific Sites:Tennis.com did a complete makeover of their website in 2005, again in 2006, and again in 2010, and Chrissie forgot to call and tell me the URLs had changed every time. News Briefs:
(Sep 2, 2010) WTA #1 Serena Williams has revealed the details of her foot injuries in an interview. The injuries required 18 stiches, 12 on her right foot and 6 on her left foot, and surgery on her right foot to repair a torn toe tendon. USA Today interview(August 20, 2010) WTA #1 Serena Williams has withdrawn from this year's US Open. Serena has not yet recovered from cutting her right foot on broken glass at a restaurant in Europe in July, and from repair surgery after the injury. Serena said "My doctors have advised against my playing so that my foot can heal."
Serena cut her foot after her Wimbledon title victory on July 3, and the injury was at first not thought to be serious. Serena then lost to Kim Clijsters in an exhibition in Belgium on July 8. Asked how she was able to play the exhibition with the injury, Serena said: "Those Belgian doctors and waffles."
Serena underwent surgery in Los Angeles on July 15. Serena had previously withdrawn from three tourneys leading up to the US Open and from all of her 2010 World Team Tennis matches due to the injury. AP story - July 20 AP update - original AP story
(August 18, 2010) Former WTA #1 Justine Henin will not play any more WTA tourneys until 2011. Justine incurred a partial ligament tear in her right elbow while playing her 4th round match against Kim Clijsters at Wimbledon on in June (Kim won the match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3), which had already caused her to withdraw from the summer season, including this year's US Open.
Justine said: "I took several medical examinations in the last days... Unfortunately the healing process is taking time. This means I must be patient... For my preparation for the competition in 2011, I cannot take any risks, so I hope to be back to practice in October. I'll work hard to get ready for this new season!" Justine's official website - BBC story
(March 5, 2010) The WTA has posted a new page showing "all-time" (which means since 1989!) and current year's service speed leaders. However, a note at the bottom of the page shows that the data, is only from show courts at a fraction of the tourneys (12 events this year).
The actual all-time WTA service speed record is 130 miles per hour, set by then 35-year-old Brenda Schultz-McCarthy in the 1st round of qualifying at Cincinnati in 2006. The WTA should not list "all-time" service speed leaders without making this perfectly clear.

Maria's previous deal with Prince, a five-year contract, was signed when she was 14 years old. As is often the case with endorsement contracts, the new deal includes a base pay, plus incentives for high rankings and tournament performance. Maria also has (or has had) endorsement contracts with Gatorade & Tropicana, Colgate - Palmolive, Motorola (expired in 2007), Parlux Fragrances, Canon, watchmaker TAG Heuer, Land Rover, Nike, and others, plus Japan-only deals with Honda & Pepsi, which make her the highest-paid female athlete in the world, earning an estimated $23 to $25 million a year. |
