On Thursday in Rome, in the 3rd round of the Internazionali d' Italia Alice Cup (aka the Italian Open), the 5-time Wimbledon champion, 31 year old wild card #72 (and former #1) Venus Williams from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, defeated last year's US Open champion, 28 year old 5th seeded #5 (career high: #4) Samantha Stosur from Gold Coast, Australia, 6-4, 6-3 (photo shown).

Reaching the quarterfinals makes Rome Venus's best tourney since returning to play this year after being sidelined last September by Sjögren's Syndrome, which causes fatigue and joint pain.

Venus said: "Every match is a lesson and a challenge for me. I think that all wins are great wins nowadays. I've had to get used to a lot of things and I'm still figuring out a lot. I'm making adjustments at the beginning of every week." WTA story

In the quarterfinals on Friday, Venus will play the 2011 Rome champion (and last month's champ at Stuttgart), 25 year old 2nd seeded #2 (and former #1) Maria Sharapova of Russia (residences: Manhattan Beach, CA & Bradenton, FL).

Venus and Maria are tied at 3-3 in career matches.. Their most recent meeting was in 2009 on a Deco-Turf hardcourt in the quarterfinals at Stanford, when Venus defeated Maria 6-2, 6-2. They have never before met on a clay court.

Also on Thursday at the Foro Italico, the 2010 champion at Marbella, Spain, 30 year old #21 (career high: #10) Flavia Pennetta of Italy (residence: Verbier, Switzerland), defeated the 2011 finalist at New Haven, 27 year old #29 (career high: #28) Petra Cetkovska from Prostejov, Czech Republic, 6-0, 6-1 (Flavia is shown after match point).

In the quarterfinals on Friday, Flavia will play the 2002 Rome champion (and this year's green & blue clay champion at Charleston & Madrid), 30 year old 9th seeded #9 (last week, #6 this week, and former #1) Serena Williams from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Serena leads Flavia 2-0 in career matches. Their most recent meeting was in 2009 on a Deco-Turf hardcourt in the quarterfinals of the US Open, when Serena defeated Flavia 6-4, 6-3.

Yahoo! US and ESPN news photo searches are located at the top of every page at tennis.quickfound.net. The same 304x345 pic at Yahoo! US is 452x512 at ESPN and 397x450 at the France & UK Yahoos (but Yahoo! includes Reuters, AFP, and some other agency pics which ESPN does not).
Yahoo! news photos are kept on the server for 30 days (ESPN: 15 days). The Yahoo! link above is now is now to the new Yahoo! Sports tennis photo gallery, which might not find all of the photos. If you are looking for more, try the individual player names, or the name of the tourney, or the city it is in, with the search form below (or try the international Yahoo! links, below).
Yahoo! Sports now includes some much larger photos than before from AFP (Agence France-Presse), either 660 or 800 pixels in their largest dimension. Unfortunately, these larger images cannot currently be accessed via the usual Yahoo! News photo search. You have to browse through the Yahoo! Sports tennis photo gallery to find them, or, alternatively, search for a player profile at Yahoo! Sports, then click on the "Photos" link at their profile page, to get the pics. Only the AFP pics are extra large, and not all of them.
The Tennis.com Photo Gallery, displays the same AP photos as ESPN, with the same quality and size (512 px max), and is, unfortunately, not searchable.

Yahoos! of other nations sometimes include photos not shown on US Yahoo! Also, the UK Yahoo! includes some photos (from the EMPICS agency) that are over 30 days old, unlike the other Yahoos!. The Yahoo links below are category links, instead of keyword links, so if you just want to see all tennis photos click on the links instead of using the search form.

CBS Sportsline: Tennis News Photos carries tennis news photos from Getty Images that are not available from Yahoo! or ESPN, plus the same AP pics. The pics are usually larger and sharper than Yahoo US, but smaller than ESPN's. Unfortunately, the Sportsline photo gallery is not searchable, and the photos sometimes on their server for less than one day.

BBC Tennis News Photos are in a slide-show format, and do not link to larger versions.

  Sports Sites' Tennis News Pages:

CNN-Sports Illustrated: Tennis covers tennis with AP (and sometimes Reuters) stories. Occasionally the stories have a mid-size photo or two, but not as many as they used to, and the pics are no longer linked to large versions.

BBC Sport: Tennis reduced the length of most stories in 2005. They often have small photos, but never large ones. They also have an online Tennis Academy.

CBS Sports: Tennis coverage is basically AP, but you have to find photos on a separate page (listed above).

ESPN: Tennis is basically AP; they have improved their layout & navigation.

  Tennis-Specific Sites:

Tennis.com did a complete makeover of their website in 2005, again in 2006, and again in 2010, and Chrissie forgot to call and tell me the URLs had changed every time. The site has statistics, feature stories, results, events information, and hundreds of excellent tennis instruction articles and tips from the publishers of Tennis Magazine.
You can search the very useful feature article, "Your Game" instruction, and message board forum sections of the Tennis.com website with this form. Try to be specific--if you simply search for "backhand" you will get countless results, all the articles in which the word "backhand" is used.

Blogspot WTA

Women's Tennis Apparel is a blog about what the ladies are wearing.

From January 2000 through March 2001, CNNSI published the Kristina Brandi Tennis Diary, a "diary" kept every 2 weeks by WTA player Kristina Brandi, showing what life is like for touring WTA players.

  Tennis History:

"The 700-year-old French game of tennis, traditionally as much a lady's as a man's game, was introduced to the U.S. in 1874 by a woman, Mary E. Outerbridge..."
See more from this Sept. 9, 1946, TIME Magazine cover story on women's tennis and 1946 Wimbledon and Forest Hills champ Pauline Betz now on the Tennis Articles page.

TIME Magazine, May 23, 1955:
In her first column, the San Diego Union's new Women's Sports Editor Maureen ("Little Mo") Connolly, retired as the world's greatest lady tennis star at a ripe old 21, showed that sports punditry is as easy for her as smashing a tennis ball down an opponents throat.
Lamented Little Mo in great pontifical style: "[On] the American scene today ... we're reducing sports to a cluster of numbers on a board ... We ... are expecting our champions to be stadium automatons, the human equivalents of the balls in a super pinball machine ... We're watching for the numbers to light up and forgetting the play."

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club site still has some good Wimbledon history pages.

The USOpen.org History has stats and year-by-year finals descriptions since 1968 (but nothing about the Forest Hills and Newport Casino US Nationals before the "Open era").

Other Tennis Stats & Records:
Although crippled by intrusive advertising, Tennis Corner offers excellent single page summaries of ATP and WTA player statistics. And their WTA & ATP Results Archive 1968-2003 has records of ATP and WTA tournament champions and final scores going back to the mid-1970's, and for major tournaments back to 1968 (the first year of "Open" professional tennis).

  News Briefs:

(Mar 31, 2012) The Brazilian tennis federation has announced that Brazil will host a WTA tournament beginning in 2013. The franchise they have been awarded was vacated by the Marbella, Spain, tourney, which followed Miami on the WTA calendar (the same week as Charleston). Brazil has not hosted a WTA event for the past 11 years. AP story

(Dec 23, 2012) Sony Ericsson will terminate their sponsorship of the WTA Tour at the end of 2012. The mobile phone manufacturer has been the WTA's primary global sponsor since 2005 at a price of almost $14.7 million a year. A replacement sponsor has not yet been named. Sony Ericsson PR manager Graciela Pineda said: "This was a strategic decision based on the evolution of the business and the brand." The joint venture Sony Ericsson will also soon become Sony only: Ericsson announced in October it would sell its 50 percent of the company to Sony for $1.46 billion. ESPN story

(Aug 31, 2011) Former WTA #1 Venus Williams has withdrawn from the US Open due to illness. In a statement, Venus, who has been troubled occasionally for years by illness which was sometimes labeled as anemia, said that she has Sjögren's Syndrome.

Venus said: "I’m really disappointed to have to withdraw from this year’s US Open. I have been recently diagnosed with Sjögren's Syndrome, an autoimmune disease which is an ongoing medical condition that affects my energy level and causes fatigue and joint pain. I enjoyed playing my first match here and wish I could continue but right now I am unable to. I am thankful I finally have a diagnosis and am now focused on getting better and returning to the court soon." US Open statement

(Jul 15, 2011) WTA #28 Alisa Kleybanova is undergoing treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma (a form of cancer) in Italy. Alisa said: "After I do treatment for a few more months, if I feel well, there's a chance I'll be able to play tennis again. I really miss playing..." Alisa has won two WTA singles titles, both last year, in Kuala Lumpur and Seoul. Today is Alisa's 22nd birthday. Letter from Alisa via WTA - Hodgkin's Lymphoma

(Jun 25, 2011) The WTA season ending Tournament of Champions will move from Bali to Sofia, Bulgaria, from 2012 to 2014. WTA story

(Mar 2, 2011) Former WTA #1 Serena Williams has been treated for a pulmonary embolism. Serena's spokesman, Nicole Chabot, told People Magazine "Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars [Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles] for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation... Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism [a blood clot in the lungs] which was discovered upon her return to L.A. She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot... Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications." People.com story

(Jan 26, 2011) 7-time Grand Slam champion and former WTA #1 Justine Henin has retired. The elbow injury she incurred last year at Wimbledon is not healing, and she has been playing in pain. Doctors now tell Justine that the injury will not heal.

Justine said: "I spent the last days undergoing various medical tests and they have confirmed that my elbow has been damaged by my adventure in Australia. After my crash at Wimbledon in June, I knew it would be difficult to come back. But I had decided to keep playing and to give everything to overcome the injury. In these recent months I have rarely been spared from the pain, those last months were very hard. Time has passed, and the doubts have grown, and only return to the courts would give me answers. Not the answer I was hoping for... unfortunately. I suffered a lot the last week and every day gave me more and more pain, but I believed that my will would take the upper hand. Today, the examinations are clearly and and the doctors [say] formally, my elbow is too fragile and hurt so that my passion and my profession at high level cannot continue to exist." Justine Henin official website

28-year-old Justine Henin from Brussels, Belgium, previously retired on May 14, 2008, but returned to play in January, 2010. She has won 43 WTA singles titles, starting with Antwerp in 1999 and ending with 's-Hertogenbosch; in 2010, including the 2003, '05, '06, & '07 French Open, the 2003 & '07 US Open, and the 2004 Australian Open. She had a 525-115 record in singles matches. Justine won a career-total of $20,917,513 in prize money, and was ranked #1 in the world for 117 weeks.

(Dec 20, 2010 revised) Over 175 movies have been added to the video players which can be found on many pages at quickfound.net, including this one. Simply select "Movies (full length)" with the left selector form, then choose a film with the right selector form after the list appears.     (Dec 12, 2010) Retired former WTA #1 Martina Hingis married French showjumper Thibault Hutin in a civil ceremony in Paris on Friday, December 10. The wedding was reported in the Swiss magazine Schweizer Illustrierte; they will publish photos of the ceremony on Monday.
Martina said: "Our wedding came as a surprise for many, but it has been in planning long in advance." Schweizer Illustrierte story (German) - English translation via Google - AFP story

(Dec 11, 2010) Former WTA #1 Serena Williams shared a photo of herself practicing today. Serena said: "Me at practice. U guys like my new practice outfit???" Serena Williams at Twitter

Besides the new outfit, the photo also shows Serena's rather large brace to protect her right foot while it heals from a re-injured torn tendon, which is the reason she cannot play in next month's Australian Open.

(Dec 9, 2010) #1 Caroline Wozniacki shared the very nice view from her apartment window in Monte Carlo today. Caroline said: "When you wake up and this is what you see when you look out the window, you know it will be a good day :)" Caroline Wozniacki at Twitter

(Oct 22, 2010) Former WTA #1 Maria Sharapova is engaged to Slovenian Los Angeles Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic. The pair met a year ago at a friend's barbecue; no wedding date has been set. Vujacic announced the engagement on Thursday night. Maria's agent (Max Eisenbud of IMG) confirmed the news in an email to the Associated Press. Vujacic, now in his seventh season with the Lakers, averaged 2.8 points and 1.2 rebounds in 67 games last year. AP story

(March 5, 2010) The WTA has posted a new page showing "all-time" (which means since 1989!) and current year's service speed leaders. However, a note at the bottom of the page shows that the data, is only from show courts at a fraction of the tourneys (12 events this year).
The actual all-time WTA service speed record is 130 miles per hour, set by then 35-year-old Brenda Schultz-McCarthy in the 1st round of qualifying at Cincinnati in 2006. The WTA should not list "all-time" service speed leaders without making this perfectly clear.

(Jan 11, 2010) Former WTA #1 Maria Sharapova has signed a new endorsement contract with Nike which could pay her as much as $70 million over the next eight years.

In 2007 Maria signed a racquet endorsement contract with Prince which will pay her around $25 million dollars over 10 years.

Maria's previous deal with Prince, a five-year contract, was signed when she was 14 years old.
As is often the case with endorsement contracts, the new deal includes a base pay, plus incentives for high rankings and tournament performance.

Maria also has (or has had) endorsement contracts with Gatorade & Tropicana, Colgate - Palmolive, Motorola (expired in 2007), Parlux Fragrances, Canon, watchmaker TAG Heuer, Land Rover, Nike, and others, plus Japan-only deals with Honda & Pepsi, which make her the highest-paid female athlete in the world, earning an estimated $23 to $25 million a year.
