  Warsaw, 2008:

On Monday in Warsaw, Poland, in the rain-delayed final of the J&S Cup, the 2005 J&S Cup champ, 23-year-old top-seeded # 1 Justine Henin of Belgium (residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco), handily defeated unseeded 22-year-old # 39 Alona Bondarenko from Krivyi Rig, Ukraine, 6-1, 6-3 (Justine is shown during the match, and after match point).

Justine said: "I lost a little bit of my intensity in the second set when I was ahead 2-0; things were coming a little too easy, and I lost my focus. But at the end of the match I got my intensity back and was able to step into the court again...
"It was hard yesterday [waiting to play during the rain]; it's a bit sad when you have to play a final on Monday morning, but I'm really happy to have won my second title here. It's good preparation for the rest of the clay court season. I hope I can keep playing like this and get a few more matches in me before the French." WTA story

Alona said: "It was my first time playing Justine. I was nervous in the first set, but then I started playing better.... I enjoyed my experience, reaching the final and playing Justine, but next time, I hope to play better. I'll talk this over with my coach and sister, who were watching the match, and we'll figure something out."

Justine and Alona had never before met on the field of combat.
Justine is now 32-16 in WTA singles finals, winning her most recent titles earlier this year in Doha and Dubai. Three of Justine's five Grand Slam tourney titles have come at Roland Garros, on red clay, her favorite surface. Justine's match record thus far in 2007 is 19-2.
Alona is now 1-2 in WTA singles finals; she won her title last year at Luxembourg, which like Warsaw is a Tier II tourney, but indoors. Alona's match record in 2007 is 10-7, with four of those victories in the past week, during which she played very well.

  Portoroz, 2008:

On Sunday in Portoroz, Slovenia, in the final of the Slovenia Open, 21-year-old 8th-seeded # 51 Sara Errani from Bologna, Italy, defeated 26-years-old-next-Thursday 4th-seeded # 31 Anabel Medina Garrigues from Valencia, Spain, 6-3, 6-3 (Sara is shown after match point). Sara's prize is $22,900, Anabels, $12,345.

Sara said: "I think we were both tired, but we both tried hard and it was a nice match. We know each other very well. We practice together in Valencia... I think she maybe struggled a bit with the long points and made some errors, which helped me today...
"The hardcourts here in Portoroz are a little bit slower, which probably helped me against aggressive players like Kirilenko and Wozniacki. It was probably better for me to play against them than against Anabel today, because it made it more difficult for them to close the points out...
"I haven't changed anything this year; I just try to practice hard every day, and the results are starting to come. At the beginning of the year I was just hoping to make it to the Olympic team and I did make it, which I'm really excited about." WTA story

Sara is now 2-0 in WTA singles finals; she won her first title this year in Palermo. Sara has a 26-17 match record in 2008.

Anabel is now 8-5 in WTA singles finals; she the title this year in Strasbourg. Seven of her titles were won on red clay, only one on a hardcourt. Anabel now has a 34-18 match record in 2008.

2007: On Saturday, April 28, in Warsaw, Elena Dementieva, back in action after being sidelined for a couple of months by
a rib stress fracture, helped out with the main draw... On Monday, last year's Warsaw champ Kim Clijsters, out to practice,
was apparently thinking about how much she likes playing on clay... also on Monday, Tsvetana Pironkova looked good despite the
cool weather while winning her qualifying final, and Anna Chakvetadze, after winning her 1st round match, celebrated by singing
the Theme from Star Wars on Polish TV, translating the complex Bill Murray lyrics into Polish on the spot...

2007: On Wednesday in Warsaw, Anna Chakvetadze's nice long natural-looking hair was fully deployed as she prepared for her match
against Tathiana Garbin... on Tuesday, Kim Clijsters came a-runnin' when she heard that Nadia Petrova was signing autographs
(she's always wanted one)... and in other Wednesday operations, Jelena Jankovic practiced cooking with Tour sponsor Whirlpool's
fine products, Elena Dementieva applied her Ivana Henryova for the fans (she'd better save one for Kim),
and top seed Justine Henin got ready for Thursday, and her first match since Miami in March...
