More Tsushima! In Saturday's Final at Gold Coast, # 10 Ai Sugiyama of Japan defeated # 12 Nadia Petrova of Russia for the 2nd time in a final 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 (Ai is shown after match point).
Unfortunately Nadia was troubled by a strained thigh muscle she incurred during the 2nd set. The injury was bad enough to cause Nadia to withdraw from next week's Canberra Classic, where she was to be the top seed.
Ai is now 2-1 in career meetings against Nadia. 28-year-old Ai has now won 6 of the 11 WTA tourney singles finals she has played in; 21-year-old Nadia was playing in just her 2nd WTA final; she lost in the Linz final last year to somebody named Ai Sugiyama, 7-5, 6-4. Both young ladies swing Prince bats, Ai's is a "More Control DB," while Nadia's is an "Airstick." Nadia was formerly garbed by the group known as Prince, but recently joined the ranks of adidas. Ai is one of Nike's many WTA supermodels.
The main draw for Gold Coast had 8 seeds, with 2 1st-round byes. There were 4 qualifiers and 2 wild cards in the main draw.
Saturday's Final in Gold Coast began at 11:30am local time. Gold Coast time is GMT (UCT, ZULU) +10 hours (Pacific Time+18, often=the next day, 6 hours earlier; ET+15). Gold Coast is located on the eastern coast of Australia just south of Brisbane.

Repeat! On Saturday in the Final in Auckland, last year's champ Eleni Daniilidou of Greece defeated 18-year-old American Ashley Harkleroad 6-3, 6-2 ("Lena," as Eleni is said to be known, is shown with the hardware).
Eleni said: "I'm a little bit surprised to have won again. I didn't expect it but I gave 100 percent to each match and the results came. I didn't feel very confident all week but sometimes you don't feel great but when you fight you get the result." story
It was their 1st WTA match againt each other. Eleni is now 3-1 in WTA singles finals; it was Ashley's first time. Eleni wears Lacoste togs and wields a Wilson wacket. Ashley is one of Nike's thousands; she swings a Babolat "Pure Drive."
The main draw for Auckland had 8 seeds, with no 1st-round byes. There were 4 qualifiers and 5 wild cards in the main draw.
Saturday's Final in Auckland began at 1pm local time. Auckland time is GMT (UCT, ZULU) +13 hours (Pacific Time+21, often=the next day, 3 hours earlier; ET+18).

#5 Lindsay Davenport defeated Barbara Strycova 6-4, 6-3 in Perth on Tuesday

Hopman Cup, Perth, AUS
teams - schedule
Alicia Molik of Australia was forced to withdraw from Saturday's Hopman Cup Final, when the foot injury she sustained on Thursday turned out to be worse than originally thought. Alicia actually has a torn tendon in her left foot, and will miss next week's adidas International and might miss the Australian Open as well. Australia was thus replaced by the Slovak Republic for the Final.
In Saturday's Final, the US (Lindsay Davenport & James Blake) defeated the Slovak Republic (Daniela Hantuchova & Karol Kucera) 2-1.
The Hopman Cup is not a WTA-sanctioned event, but an ITF event featuring highly-ranked WTA&ATP pairs from 9 nations competing as teams. As you might expect, each international tie has 3 matches, 2 singles and 1 doubles. Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport, Amelie Mauresmo, Anastasia Myskina, Daniela Hantuchova, Alicia Molik, Petra Mandula, Maureen Drake, & Barbora Strycova are the WTA players competing in Perth this year.

Watson's Water Challenge, Hong Kong, CHN
The Water Challenge is a major exhibition event. WTA players there this year were # 8 Elena Dementieva, #9 Chanda Rubin, # 11 Venus Williams, # 32 Maria Sharapova, and Martina Navratilova (playing mixed doubles). # 6 Jennifer Capriati was to play, but withdrew due to back trouble.
