In the Strasbourg final on Saturday, #26 s7 Silvia Farina Elia of Italy defeated #163 Karolina Sprem of Croatia 6-3 4-6 6-4 (Silvia is shown with a very nice trophy she can pack in her suitcase).
Karolina has never won a WTA singles final, but she has won 6 ITF finals since 2001. Silvia has now won the Strasbourg tournament three years in a row, her only 3 victories in 9 WTA singles final appearances.

In the Madrid final, top seed Chanda Rubin of the US defeated #84 wc Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 (Chanda is shown with Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, the Spanish tennis great who retired at the end of last year... the Antonov 225 to carry her trophy home for her has not yet arrived, but Arantxa has just informed Chanda that there really is enough champagne in Spain to fill the trophy).
Chanda, who lost to Monica Seles in the Madrid final in 2002, has now won 6 WTA singles titles in 15 finals appearances. Apparently Chanda likes to win the week prior to a Grand Slam; she won at Eastbourne (just before Wimbledon) last year.
