On Sunday at Stuttgart, in the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, the 2013 & 2012 tourney champion (and 2013 champ at Indian Wells), 27 year old 6th seeded #9 (and former #1) Maria Sharapova of Russia (residences: Manhattan Beach, California and Bradenton, Florida), won her third straight PTGP title by defeating the 2014 champ at Auckland (and the 2008 French Open champion), 26 year old 2nd seeded #12 (and former #1) Ana Ivanovic of Serbia (residence: Basel, SUI), 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 (Ana is shown during the match, Maria is shown with the Road&Trackware afterward).

Maria's prize is $120,000 and a Porsche 911 Targa 4S valued at about the same amount; Ana's prize is $64,000.

After dropping the 1st set, Maria trailed 1-3 in the 2nd. Then she won seven of the next eight games.

Maria said: "For the first half of the match I thought it might not be my day today, but somehow I turned it around. I had quite a slow beginning to the year, but me and my team have been working hard to get in the position to win titles again, and I'm so happy to be able to do it here." WTA story

Ana said: ""From the first moment it was always a close match. It was always a few close balls to decide each game, and it went on the whole match. In the second set [Maria] definitely went for those big shots, though, and she made some amazing points. She's just a great player, and that's what happens when you play against great players in big matches like this. You need to use your opportunities. But there's always next time."

Maria now leads Ana 8-2 in career matches, and Maria won their last 7 encounters. Their most recent meeting was in 2013 on red clay in the semifinals at Madrid, when Maria defeated Ana 6-4, 6-3.

Maria "Claypova" is now 30-22 in WTA singles finals (7-2 in clay court finals), and has a 17-5 singles match record in 2014. Maria has never lost a match at Stuttgart (13-0)

Ana is now 13-6 in WTA singles finals (2-2 in clay court finals), and has a 23-6 singles match record this year.

Meanwhile at Marrakech, Morocco, in the final of the Grand Prix SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem, 21 year old #72 (career high: #64) Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor from Villena, Spain, won her first WTA singles title by defeating 27 year old #44 (career high: #44) Romina Oprandi from Bern, Switzerland, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Maria-Teresa and Romina had met only once before, in 2012 on red clay in the quarterfinals of an ITF tourney at Bucharest, when Maria-Teresa defeated Romina 6-2, 6-2.

Maria-Teresa was playing in her first WTA singles final. She has a 8-7 singles match record this season.

Romina was also playing in her first WTA singles final. She has a 11-7 singles match record for the year.

Maria driving a forehand

Maria took a 5-1 lead in the 3rd set, but Lucie won the next 5 games. Maria broke Lucie as she was serving for the match at 6-5, then Maria prevailed in the final tiebreaker.

Maria said: "I think Lucie is an exceptional player. She's presented me a lot of challenges when we've played in the past, and going into the match today I knew it wasn't going to be an easy one. I could have returned better. But I think this was one of the best serving matches she's played against me. She was finding the lines extremely well and mixing it up too, and it was hard to break her. But I'm really happy I was able to be the winner of this match. I was two points from losing." WTA story

The match lasted 3 hours and 23 minutes. It was the first three-tiebreaker match in a WTA main draw since 2010 [Madrid R2: #1 s1 Serena Williams USA d #44 Vera Dushevina RUS 6(2)-7, 7-6(5), 7-6(5)].

Maria said: "I love these kinds of challenges. We've played each other many times, and there are certainly no secrets about each other's games. But I don't think we've played on clay in a while, so I look forward to improving all aspects of my game because she's playing well." WTA story

Ana driving a forehand

Ana said: "I didn't feel I did many things wrong in that first set, [Julia] was just playing very well. I don't think she had any unforced errors, to be honest, and she had a lot of winners. But I knew I had to stay positive and calm.
"I waited for my moment and turned it around early in the second set. I played a really good game to break her and then managed to hold my serve, and that set the tone a little bit in the second set. After that a few errors started creeping into her game and I think I used that to my advantage really well. I used that momentum and in the third set I just kept going, staying aggressive and taking risks." WTA story

Aga reaching for a forehand, and Maria driving a backhand

Maria won on her 8th match point. Maria said: "[Agnieszka] likes moving her opponents around the court and she does that extremely well when she has time. I don't want to find myself running forwards and backwards. I need to look for the opportunities when I have short ball and take advantage of that and not let her get back into the point, which she does so often. That's something that I did really well...
"Obviously it was a very difficult end and she played extremely well on some of those match points. I was happy that I stayed aggressive and I was able to win the last one. It was a really big point obviously. So it's a big win for me, probably the biggest since my injury." WTA story

Ana said: "I'm definitely relieved. The last game was a little bit of a drama. When [Jelena] saved that match point when my ball hit the net cord, that was just an amazing point. But it was a great way to finish the match. I really tried to step in on the tight situations at the end. That's my game." WTA story

Maria Sharapova defeated Ana in the 2013 Stuttgart quarterfinals, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. About the final, Ana said: "It's definitely going to be a very tough match. I don't think [Maria has] ever lost a match here. She loves this tournament, and hopefully it will be a great match like we had here last year."

Maria driving forehand and backhand, and after match point

Maria said: "The further you go in the tournament, the harder it gets, and I really wanted to step up today and produce a good performance. The first tournament on clay is always tough. It's important to improve with each match and I think I've done that this week. I know how good Sara is on the surface and I was extra ready to perform against her. She has a lot of experience and really knows how to play, so I had to take care of things on my side of the net." WTA story
