On Saturday at Oeiras, in the final of the Portugal Open, the 2013 finalist at Oeiras & Acapulco, 25 year old top seeded #16 (career-high: #14) Carla Suarez Navarro from Barcelona, Spain, won her first WTA singles title by defeating the 2009 French Open and 2004 US Open champion, 28 year old 7th seeded #29 (career high: #2) Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia (residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 (Svetlana is shown during her quarterfinal victory; Carla is shown holding the glassware after the final).

    Carla's prize is $43,000; Svetlana's prize is $21,400.

Carla trailed 1-4 in the 3rd set, then won five straight games to take the title.

Carla said: "I was a little bit nervous today. It was a difficult match too. It was windy today and we were both making mistakes, and we know each other well, but the most important thing for me today was just to be solid all the time.

"On match point I was only thinking to put the ball in, and that's what I did, and I felt so good when I finally finished the match." WTA story

Svetlana said: "I tried to fight, but unfortunately it didn't happen today, and I want to congratulate Carla on a great week. It's definitely an amazing feeling to win your first WTA title."

Svetlana still leads Carla 3-2 in career matches. Their previous meeting was in 2013 in the 3rd round of the Australian Open, when Svetlana defeated Carla 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Carla is now 1-5 in WTA singles finals. Her singles match record this season is 26-10.

Svetlana is now 14-19 in previous WTA singles finals, but has not won a title since 2010 (San Diego). This was the first final Svetlana has reached since 2011 (Dubai). Svetlana has a 8-6 singles match record in 2014.

Genie reaching for a forehand

Early in the 2nd set Genie fell, returned a shot while still down on the clay, then got up and won the point (see video in this week's tourney playlist).

Genie said: "It was a solid performance. I was pretty happy with how I played... That point at the start of the second was crazy: I was on the run and I fell and had pretty much given up on the point. But then I saw the ball come near me and I though just for fun I'd hit it. My shot was kind of weird but I got back in the point and then managed to hit a passing shot." WTA story

Elena about to swat a backhand

Elena trailed 2-5 in the 3rd set, then won the next 5 games to take the match.

Elena said: "I played two tough matches in a row. In both of them I was down and came back. I'm just happy that I fought until the end and didn't give up. Everything was against me. Roberta played really well today. She was playing unbelievably at the beginning of the third set. I had no chances, but then I just tried to fight for every single point, got lucky on a couple of key points and was able to come back...

"I've been working for many years and am getting more mature. I'm not putting that much pressure on myself. I'm really enjoying myself on the court and trying to win as many matches as I can." WTA story
