  Budapest, 2009:

On Sunday in Budapest, Hungary, in the final of the Budapest Grand Prix, 20-year-old 4th-seeded # 28 (and Hungarian #1) Agnes Szavay (residence: income tax-free Monte Carlo, Monaco), defeated 30-year-old top-seeded # 22 Patty Schnyder from Baech, Switzerland, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 (photo shown).

    Agnes's prize is $37,000; Patty's is $19,000.

Agnes said: "In the first set, I was too excited and that gave the set to the more experienced Patty. I'm glad I managed to turn the score around and please the home crowd." AP story

Patty said: "The game she produced today was too strong for me. I tried my best, but Agnes put too much pressure on me, and my returns were not very good, either."

Agnes and Patty had never before met on the field of combat. Agnes had the home court advantage, and Patty may have been a bit tired from playing 4½ sets on Saturday (finishing a rain-interrupted quarterfinal before playing her semifinal), while Agnes finished her semi in about one hour.

Agnes is now 3-2 in WTA singles finals; her earlier titles came in 2007, in Palermo and Beijing. Agnes is 21-14 in matches this year.
Patty is now 11-14 in WTA singles finals; she won the Bali title last year. Patty has a 15-13 match record for 2009.

  Båstad, 2009:

On Saturday in Båstad, Sweden, in the final of the Collector Swedish Open, this year's Bogota champion, 26-year-old unseeded #42 Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez from Barcelona, Spain, defeated last year's Stockholm champion, 19-years-old-today top-seeded # 9 (and Scandanavian #1) Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark (residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 (Maria Jose is shown holding the hardware after the match).

    Maria Jose's prize is $37,000; Caroline's is $19,000.

Maria Jose said: "This was the most enjoyable tournament for me so far this season. I felt right at home here and I hope to come back next year. I played very well and I'm happy I played my own game." BBC story
It was Caroline's 19th birthday. To Caroline, Maria Jose said: "I'm sorry I spoiled your celebrations, but I promise I will buy you something instead."

Caroline said: "Maria played better than me, she played smart and it was difficult to get a rhythm with her stop volleys. But I'm still happy to have reached the final."

Maria Jose and Caroline had never played each other before.
Maria Jose is now 2-1 in WTA singles finals; she defeated Gisela Dulko to win this year's Bogota title, and reached the Barcelona final last year. Maria Jose, who has won 12 ITF singles titles, now has a 24-14 match record for 2009.
Caroline is now 5-5 in WTA singles finals; she won the Eastbourne and Ponte Vedra Beach titles this year, and reached the finals at Madrid, Charleston and Memphis. Caroline has a 49-14 match record this season.

The Nordic Light Open, held at Stockholm's 1912 Olympic Stadium in recent years, has been moved to Båstad for the 2009 season. Båstad has been the site of the ATP Swedish Open since it began in 1948; the women also played there until 1990. Båstad Tennis Stadium is a few hundred yards from the beach, close to Pepe's Bodega, a local restaurant and nightclub. The stadium was rebuilt in 2002 to accommodate the Hotel Skansen underneath the seaside bleachers.
