On Sunday in Bad Gastein, Austria, in the final of the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies, unseeded 21-year-old #73 (career-high: #64) Julia Goerges from Bad Oldesloe, Germany, won her first WTA singles title by defeating the 2009 champ in Luxembourg, 21-year-old 3rd-seeded #37 (career high: #37) Timea Bacsinszky from Belmont-sur-Lausanne, Switzerland, 6-1, 6-4.

    Julia's prize is $37,000; Timea's is $19,000.

It was Julia's 2nd match of the day. Earlier on Sunday, she had defeated the 2008 Budapest champion, 20-year-old #81 (and former #11) Alizé Cornet from Nice, France, in their rain-postponed semifinal, by the same score, 6-1, 6-4 (the tourney photo gallery does not make it perfectly clear, but the photo of Julia above was probably taken after match point of her semifinal win today).

Julia said: "Amazing...my first title, I am so happy... In the morning I told myself just try to get to the final. It was my fifth chance and I did it.

"I was so happy to be in my first final that I was really relaxed against Timea, and the crowd was so supportive too. I got tight on one match point but closed it out well. I'm so happy to have my first title." WTA story - Julia Goerges at Twitter

Julia and Timea had never before met on the field of combat.
On the rise: Julia is now 1-0 in WTA singles finals; she had lost in four previous WTA singles semifinals, most recently last week to Flavia Pennetta in the Palermmo semis. Julia won the Biarritz ITF title the week before that, and has thus won 13 of her last 14 singles matches (she is also 12-3 in her last 15 doubles matches). Julia has a 22-17 singles match record in 2010.
Timea is now 1-1 in WTA singles finals; she defeated Sabine Lisicki in the Luxembourg final last year. Timea has a 16-17 singles match record in 2010.

Later on Sunday, in Portoroz, Slovenia, in the final of the Banka Koper Slovenia Open, 23-year-old #101 (and former #5) Anna Chakvetadze from Moscow, Russia, after waiting out some thunderstorms, took just after an hour to demolish 21-year-old #86 (career-high: #84) Johanna Larsson from Helsingborg, Sweden, 6-1, 6-2 (Anna is shown after the doubles final on Saturday night).

    Anna's prize is $37,000; Johanna's is $19,000.

Anna said: "This was my ninth final and Johanna's first, so I don't think she was as comfortable as me today. I was very concentrated and didn't give her many free points, so I'm very happy with my performance." WTA story

Johanna said: "Anna played really well today. I did everything I could... It was my first final and I'm happy with how things went here. If I was told a month ago I'd have these results, I wouldn't believe it."

Anna and Johanna, too, had never played each other in WTA singles before.

Anna is now 8-1 in WTA singles finals; she won her first seven, then lost to Caro Wozniacki in the 2008 New Haven final and had been in a deep slump most of the time since then. Now it appears that she may be regaining her old form. Anna has a 17-13 match record in 2010.

Johanna was playing in her first WTA singles final, so despite the loss, this was the best week of her career. She has won 11 ITF singles titles and 14 ITF doubles titles. Including ITF play, Johanna's singles match record this year is 36-12.
