Battle of Tsushima: On Sunday in the Linz Final, 2nd seed Ai Sugiyama of Japan defeated # 13 Nadia Petrova of Russia 7-5, 6-4 (Ai is shown after match point on Sunday).
Ai said: "In the three years my mother has been coaching me, I have vastly improved technically, mentally and also fitness-wise. Playing the doubles also gives me match practice for the singles...
"It wasn't easy to settle into the match today, but the longer it went on the more confident I became...
"I had a great preparation all week and my discipline really paid off. It's a mental game out there. You have to be really tough on the important points and every game was close. [Nadia is] very strong and I had to use my best weapon - my footwork. I'm in a good position for the championships now, so I just have to focus on Philadelphia [next week]..." story
It was 21-year-old Nadia's 1st WTA singles final, she will likely have more opportunities soon. 28-year-old Ai is now 5-5 in WTA singles finals. Both young ladies are currently at the highest singles ranks of their careers. Ai is currently ranked # 1 in doubles, and won her 28th WTA doubles title Sunday also, partnered with Liezel Huber. The only previous match between Nadia & Ai was at this year's Australian Open, where Nadia defeated Ai 6-4, 6-4 in the 2nd round, so they are now 1-1 for career matches.
The main draw for Linz had 8 seeds, with 4 1st-round byes. There were 4 qualifiers and 3 wild cards in the main draw.
Sunday's final in Linz began at 1:30pm local time (that is 1130 the same day GMT, UCT, ZULU, 7:30am EDT, or 4:30am PDT).
Where's Kim?: Ai Sugiyama had to make do without her usual doubles partner this week (and did), because she was playing in Luxembourg (as she usually does). In the Final there on Sunday, Ai's friend top-seeded Kim Clijsters of Belgium defeated 2nd seed # 10 Chanda Rubin of the US 6-2, 7-5 (photo shown). Kim will be # 1 in the singles rankings again next week. Kim did not play doubles in Luxembourg (she is ranked # 2 in doubles, just behind Ai), probably saving some energy for the WTA Championships in LA Nov. 3rd, where she will be battling her compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne to see who ends the year with the # 1 singles ranking.
Kim said: "I can't believe I've won this tournament now four times and it sounds weird to say I've won eight titles this year...
"After the first set Chanda really picked up her game - she took advantage of her opportunities, while my level might have dropped a little bit." story
Kim now leads Chanda 6-0 in career matches, and the 7-5 2nd set today was the closest Chanda has come to taking a set from Kim since the 1st time they played. 27-year-old Chanda is now 7-12 in WTA singles finals and has won 2 this year, while 20-year-old Kim is now 18-13 in WTA singles finals, winning 8 of those this year.
The main draw for Luxembourg had 8 seeds, with 2 1st-round byes. There were 4 qualifiers and 2 wild cards in the main draw.
Sunday's final in Luxembourg began at 3pm local time (that is 1300 the same day GMT, UCT, ZULU, 9:00am EDT, or 6:00am PDT).
