On Saturday the Eastbourne Final was delayed for almost 3 hours while 3,000 spectators were evacuated and then reseated due to a stupid telephone threat (details were not revealed). Then 2nd seed and defending champion Chanda Rubin defeated # 19 Conchita Martinez 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 (Chanda is shown with a big punchbowl they give her here every year now). Conchita still leads the career series between them 9-3, but Chanda has now won the last two times they played, both at Eastbourne. 27-year-old Chanda has now won 7 WTA singles titles in 16 finals. 31-year-old Conchita, 1994 Wimbledon Champion, has won 32 WTA singles titles, but none since 2000. Both have been playing very well lately.
In the 's-Hertogenbosch Final on Saturday, Kim Clijsters of Belgium won the title but did not defeat her friend and compatriot # 3 Justine Henin-Hardenne. The score was 6-7(4) 3-0, retired. Justine was forced to retire by an injury to her LEFT hand (photo shown). Justine bats right with a one-handed backhand, but she is clearly in considerable pain, and with Wimbledon about to start, retiring from the match was the right thing to do.
Justine said: "I don't know exactly what's wrong, but my fingers are hurting, and it wasn't good for me to continue this match. I couldn't be focused on what I want to do."
20-year-old Kim, from the Fila-ish part of Belgium, is now 14-11 in WTA singles finals; 21-year-old Justine, from the adidas-speaking part of the country, is 10-8. Justine does NOT plan to withdraw from Wimbledon, and her 1st round match is not until Tuesday.
The time in England is UCT (GMT, Zulu, Greenwich...) plus 1 hour (daylight savings). That is 8 hours ahead of PDT in the US, 5 hours ahead of EDT.
The time in the Netherlands is UCT plus 2 hours. That is 9 hours ahead of PDT in the US, 6 hours ahead of EDT.
