Nov 27, 2004 -- The WTA Tour 2005 schedule includes 1 big change which most players should like: the Fed Cup semis and final have been moved up 2 months, to the week following the US Open. This makes the WTA season 2 weeks shorter, giving the players who reach the Fed Cup semis a longer break.
Mar 3, 2005 -- The strangest change in the schedule was a dead week following the Fed Cup SFs, which are the week after Wimbledon. No tourneys were scheduled for the week of July 11th. This would have left players who lose in qualifying or the 1st round at Wimbledon (and their fans) with almost a month to kill before another WTA tourney. That is, of course, except for World Team Tennis, which appears to be the reason for the break. But how long has it been since anyone, except the promoters, has taken World Team Tennis seriously? In late Feb this gap was partially filled with a new Tier IV tourney in Modena, Italy, but there really should be a larger tourney that week also.

Opinion: The WTA Championships, limited to 8 players in singles and 4 doubles teams, should be opened up to the widest draw possible. Until the 8-player round-robin was adopted in 2003, the WTA Championships used a 16-player standard draw. A 32-player draw would be even better. This can be tough indoors, but other tourneys manage 28 or 32 player draws. This would increase fan interest. The current system is to run the qualifying for the 8 spots as a season-long "race." But the WTA Championships are not like the World Series or the Super Bowl, where about 30 teams aim to reach the 1 event that dwarfs all others. The Grand Slams are bigger than the championships, and there are hundreds of WTA players. The "race" gets practically no attention at all.
Currently, with only 8 selected for the championships, many fans will find their favorite player(s) missing. The presence of players such as Anastasia Myskina, Ai Sugiyama and Daniela Hantuchova at the Championships would substantially increase ticket sales & TV ratings.
Besides, why not spread that $3 million purse out to more players who can use the money, instead of giving it to the players who are richest already?
