Bad Gastein:

#23 Samantha Stosur
5' 7¾" 143lb RH 2H-BH

On Sunday in Turkey, in the final of the Istanbul Cup, 26 year old #68 (career high: #55) Lesia Tsurenko from Kiev, Ukraine, won her first WTA singles title by defeating 24 year old #100 (career high: #29) Urszula Radwanska from Krakow, Poland, 7-5, 6-1 (photo shown).

    Lesia's prize is $43,000; Urszula's prize is $21,400.

Lesia said: "When I saw the draw it looked tough, but I believe that if you go to a tournament you can win it. You have to think like this. And I'm so happy I could win here and show good tennis. That's my goal, getting good results and showing good tennis." WTA story

Lesia and Urszula had met only once before, in 2012 on a Plexipave hardcourt in the 1st round of qualifying at Doha, when Urszula defeated Lesia 6-2, 1-0 retired.

Lesia was playing in her first WTA singles final. She has also won 6 ITF singles titles. Her singles match record this season is now 22-13. Urszula is now 0-2 in WTA singles finals. She has won 4 ITF singles titles. Her singles match record this year is now 31-18.

Meanwhile at Bad Gastein, Austria, in the final of the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies, the 2015 champ at Strasbourg (and the 2011 US Open champion), 31 year old 2nd seeded #23 (career high: #4) Samantha Stosur from Gold Coast, Australia, defeated the 2014 champion at Tashkent, 27 year old 3rd seeded #43 (career high: #35) Karin Knapp from Lutago, Italy, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 (photo shown).

    Samantha's prize is $43,000; Karin's prize is $21,400.

Samantha said: "It was a very hard match today. I was getting completely outplayed in that first set, and even though [Karin] was up in the second set too, I started to feel like I was doing a little better. Obviously she served for the match but I hung in there, got that set then played better and better from there." WTA story

Due to rain, Karin had to play her semifinal on Sunday before the final. Karin said: "It wasn't easy to play five hours today but I was really fighting. I just missed some chances, and [Samantha] used hers. It was a great week, though. I'm looking forward to the next tournaments."

Samantha is now 7-14 in WTA singles finals. Her singles match record this season is now 22-16. Karin is now 2-2 in WTA singles finals. Her 2015 singles match record is now 16-16.

Samantha ready to slice a backhand

Samantha said: "I feel like today was definitely the best I've hit the ball and played all week. It's a good thing going into the semifinals. The conditions can help my second serve. The altitude makes the ball bounce very high, and I think my opponents are finding it difficult to control that. So if I can keep starting points like that, on my terms, that's definitely the way I want to be playing. To go through a match not facing a break point, it definitely shows I'm serving well."     Samantha said: "It wasn't ideal conditions today. It was obviously tricky when we walked out and then had to go back inside a little while because of the rain, and the court was a little bit slippery, too. But they did a great job to make it playable, and it was nice that the rain stayed away so we could play the match in the end.
