Baku:
#110 Margarita Gasparyan
6'0" 161lb RH 1H-BH

On Sunday in Azerbaijan, in the final of the Baku Cup, 21 year old #110 (career high: #110) Margarita Gasparyan from Moscow, Russia, defeated 21 year old qualifier #158 (career high: #43) Patricia Maria Tig of Romania 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 (photo shown).

    Margarita's prize is $43,000; Patricia's prize is $21,400.

Prior to this tourney, Margarita had never won a WTA main draw singles match. On Sunday, after winning her first WTA singles title, she won her first WTA doubles title as well.

Margarita said: "It's been an amazing tournament for me. It was an amazing atmosphere in the final today. I want to thank all the people who've supported me, like my hitting partner Misha, my doubles partner Alexandra [Panova] and all of the organization here. It's a very good tournament and I will always remember my week here." WTA story

Patricia and Margarita had met only once before, earlier this year on a hardcourt in the 2nd round of an ITF tourney at Andrezieux, France, when Margarita defeated Patricia 6-2, 7-5.

Both were playing in their first WTA singles final. Margarita now has a 37-8 singles match record this season. Patricia's singles match record in 2015 is 20-17.

On Saturday at Florianopolis, Brazil, in the final of the Brasil Tennis Cup, the 2015 champion at Bogota, 26 year old #80 (career high: #74) Teliana Pereira from Curitiba, Brazil, defeated the 2014 champion at Luxembourg, 21 year old #77 (career high: #43) Annika Beck from Giessen, Germany, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 (photo shown).

    Teliana's prize is $43,000; Annika's prize is $21,400.

Teliana said: "I have no words to describe what I'm feeling right now. When I came here I didn't know if I would be able to play. My knee wasn't so well. So I can't believe I managed this victory. It's the best day of my life. I'm living a dream right now." WTA story

Annika said: "I had a really good week. I won my first doubles title and the singles final means a lot to me. Teliana started to play much better in the third set than in the second set, and I really want to congratulate her for the victory. She played great tennis all week and really deserves the title."

Teliana now leads Annika 2-1 in career matches. Their previous meeting was last week on red clay in the 1st round at Bad Gastein, when Annika defeated Teliana 5-1 retired. Teliana was unable to continue that day due to a right knee injury.

Teliana is now 2-0 in WTA singles finals; she has a 35-13 singles match record this season. Annika is now 1-2 in WTA singles finals. Her singles match record in 2015 is 15-21.
