On Sunday at Sofia, Bulgaria, in the final of the 2014 WTA Tournament of Champions, the 2014 champion at Charleston, 26 year old 4th seeded #17 (career high: #9) Andrea Petkovic from Darmstadt, Germany, defeated the 2014 champion at Indian Wells, 32 year old 3rd seeded #15 (career high: #10) Flavia Pennetta of Italy (residence: Verbier, Switzerland), 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 (Flavia is show during the match; Andrea is shown holding the hardware afterward).

    Andrea's prize is $265,000; Flavia's prize is $140,000.

On court after the match, Andrea said: "I love watching Flavia play, but I hate playing her because she's so difficult to play! I'm happy could gather enough energy in the end and play well enough to win it in the end." WTA story

Andrea now leads Flavia 3-2 in career matches. Their previous was earlier this year on red clay in the 1st round at Stuttgart, when Flavia defeated Petko 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

Andrea is now 5-5 in WTA singles finals. She has a 42-23 singles match record this season.

Flavia is now 10-14 in WTA singles finals. Her 2014 singles match record is 33-20.

New Season Ending Tourney for 2015-2019

(October 8, 2014) "The WTA Elite Trophy, a brand new singles and doubles event offering $2.15 million in prize money, will be staged in Zhuhai in southern China for the next five years from 2015 to 2019.

"The 12-player singles field in Zhuhai will consist of players ranked No.9 through No.20 in the world, along with one wildcard, in a four-group round robin format. The winners of each respective group will advance to the single elimination semifinal stage of the event. Meanwhile, six doubles teams will compete in a two-group round robin format, with the winner of each group advancing to the final...

"The event in Zhuhai will replace the Tournament Of Champions on the 2015 WTA calendar." WTA story

Zhuhai is located just north of Macau, across from Shenzhen on the Pearl River Delta, south of Guangzhou.

The WTA Tournament of Champions System:

The six highest-ranked players who have won at least one International (NOT Premier ) class title during the current season (and who wish to attend) are selected for singles play in the WTA Tournament of Champions. Two wild cards entries are also chosen.

2 groups play in a round-robin format (12 matches), with two winners from each group becoming semifinalists who play off on Saturday. In the semis, the player who finishes first in each group will play the second place finisher from the other group.
If players win the same number of matches, the winner of their head-to-head match in the round robin is placed higher in the standings. 3-way ties will be resolved first by the percentage of sets won, then by the percentage of games won.

Domi said: "I played pretty well today, so I am happy with my game. I felt comfortable with my tactics, and when I use the right tactics, I play well. The tie-break was very close in the end, but I managed to cross the finish line.
"Everyone who is here is a good player, so I just have to keep doing the right thing to keep winning." WTA story

Carla said: "I was playing well today. The first match of a tournament is never easy, and it was difficult because Petkovic was fighting on every point and on every ball, but I'm really happy I was able to get through today, and happy with this win. I really want to have a good week here."

Petko's backhand drive

Andrea said: "It was a physical battle in the first set. The rallies were so long and I think we were playing one and a quarter hours. I was a little lucky to get the first set and after that it's tough to keep the intensity up, so I'm really happy I won in straight sets." WTA story

About playing Dominika Cibulkova on Thursday, Andrea said: "I played her twice this year already. Super tough matches. They were both close and I could have lost easily. She has such great intensity and is such a fighter, so it's definitely going to be a tough match."

Andrea serving

Andrea said: "I thought I was playing really, really well today, and I thought Domi was playing really well too, especially in the first set. I'm very happy with my performance out there today." WTA story

Andrea and Dominika are now tied at the top of the Sredets Group with a 2-1 record in the round robin. Andrea will finish first the group by virtue of defeating Dominika in their head-to-head—unless #18 Carla Suarez Navarro defeats #41 Tsvetana Pironkova on Friday. In that case a three way tie will result, which will be resolved by percentage of sets won, or, if still tied, by percentage of games won.

At any rate, Andrea is guaranteed to finish at least second in the Sredets Group, by virtue of winning a higher percentage of her games than Dominika. So Andrea is the first player at the tourney to clinch a place in the semifinals.

*n23 s7 Garbine Muguruza ESP d n15 s3 wc Flavia Pennetta ITA 0-6, 6-1, 6-1

Garbine said: "I went to the court really nervous. In a round robin, every match is very important. I was utilizing the wrong strategy against Pennetta. I was thinking I needed to change something, and then my coach gave me some advice, and it worked." WTA story

Tsvetana failed to convert two set points while leading 6-5 in the 1st set. Carla said: "If I lost a set today I would be out, so if I missed on one of those set points I would have been out, so I was pretty nervous on the court today. She was playing very well in the first set, too. But I was just trying to do my best and I'm happy I could make it through."

Garbine said: "The second set was really difficult because that was the moment I realized I could win. I was feeling the pressure. [Alize] was playing well too. But I just had to think and focus on my tactics, and try to win it there. I'm very happy how I played and very excited to make the semis... I'm really pleased to make the semifinals, because I didn't even know I was coming here until three days before in Singapore. For me to be here and to win three matches is very exciting for me."     Flavia said: "It was really tough from the beginning. The first four or five games were so long and so tight today. We know each other really well so we know how to play each other, and we always have a good fight until the last point. I was just trying not to give her the same rhythm all the time. I knew I had to change it up, but also be aggressive when the right moments came. Sometimes I made mistakes, but it was the right way to play today." WTA story

About playing Andrea Petkovic in the final, Flavia said: "The last time we played was on clay so this will be completely different. She plays much better on this surface and was really consistent and powerful today, so it will be tough."

n17 s4 Andrea Petkovic GER d n23 s7 Garbine Muguruza ESP 6-1, 6-4

Andrea between points

On court after the match, Andrea said: "I think I was playing really, really well up until 6-1, 5-2. I wasn't missing at all and I was feeling the ball really well until then. But then Garbi started playing a lot tougher and making fewer mistakes. She was hitting really well. I was lucky to win it in the end.

"Players like that who are so aggressive and so talented, they just need one or two rallies to get back into the match. I was glad I could serve really well in the end of the match and close it out there." WTA story
