On Sunday at Kuala Lumpur, in the final of the BMW Malaysia Open, the 2013 finalist at Birmingham, 17 year old 7th seeded #95 (career high: #62) Donna Vekic from Osijek, Croatia, won her first WTA singles title by defeating the 2014 Acapulco champion (and Australian Open finalist), 24 year old top seeded #10 (career high: #10) Dominika Cibulkova from Bratislava, Slovakia, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(4) (Dominika is shown during the match; Donna is shown holding the hardware afterward).

    Donna's prize is $43,000; Dominika's prize is $21,400.

Donna took a 5-1 lead in the 3rd set—then Domi won the next four games to level the score.

Donna said: "It was a very tough match. [Dominika] played very well throughout the whole match. I was up 5-1 in the third set and she came back out playing insane. So I'm happy I was able to get through in the end." WTA story

Dominika said: "[Donna] played really well today. In the second set I was really close to winning, but she played really well, really strong, and it was just about a few balls out there, really. It was really close. It was such a good match."

Donna and Dominika had met only once before, last month on a Plexipave hardcourt in the 2nd round at Indian Wells, when Dominika defeated Donna 6-3, 6-2.

Donna is now 1-2 in WTA singles finals, and has a 11-7 singles match record in 2014.
Dominika is now 4-7 in WTA singles finals, and has a 24-9 singles match record this season.

Domi following a forehand

Dominika said: "I didn't let [Pemra] play at all in the first set and was feeling quite good. But in the second set, I changed my racquet for the new balls and that was a mistake as the tension was not right. I was back on track after I changed my racquet again. I was really aggressive and didn't give her any chance to play." tourney story

Su-Wei's backhand drive

Rain interrupted play, but the schedule was completed. 2012 KL champ Su-Wei said: "The win brings back memories of my first tour title in Kuala Lumpur two years ago. Every time it rains, I play better so I hope for good results here... I was making a lot of mistakes in the first set. I could not hit proper balls while Jarmila was doing so well. The rain, however, threw me a lifeline." tourney story

Domi's backhand drive

Dominika said: "[Zarina] played really, really well. It was a really big test. Today was the first time it wasn't raining before the match, so it was really humid and the air was different. There was a really long game in the first set that I lost, and it really put me down physically. It made me feel really tired. It took me two or three games to get back and find my game, but I'm happy I managed to get it back." WTA story

Donna said: "I think I served really well in the first set. Not so well in the second set, but it was important to keep the momentum going. I'm very happy to be in the semifinals of a WTA event again. I've been to the semis twice before and I won both times, so I hope it's going to happen again here this week. I've been getting confidence since Indian Wells and Miami and I'm happy to continue the good run."
