  Copenhagen & Barcelona 2012:

On Sunday at Farum Arena (about 25 kilometers north of Copenhagen, Denmark), in the final of the Danish Open, the 2012 Paris indoor champion, 24 year old 2nd seeded #16 (career high: #14) Angelique Kerber from Kiel, Germany, defeated the 2010 and 2011 tourney champion, 21 year old top seeded #6 (and former #1) Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark (residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco), 6-4, 6-4 (both players are shown holding the ceramicware after the match).

    Angelique's prize is $37,000; Caro's prize is $19,000.

Angelique said: "It was amazing to play in front of this crowd, even though most of them supported Caroline. It was a great atmosphere and it was good fun to play. And I felt like I had nothing to lose. If I lost the match, it's okay against her. It made me take more chances and I'm glad it worked out." WTA story

Caroline had been undefeated at Copenhagen in the three years the tourney has been held; her Danish Open record now drops to 14-1.

Caroline said: "You always want to win—yes it's disappointing to lose, but it's not a disaster. You lose matches sometimes, and today was one of those times. There's a new match and new tournament coming, so you go on."

Caro and Angelique had met only twice before. In 2008 on a hardcourt in the 1st round at Stockholm, Caroline defeated Angelique 6-3, 6-4. And last year in the 2nd round at Copenhagen, on the same indoor hardcourt at Farum Arena, Caroline won again, 7-6(4), 6-3. Angelique has improved substantially since then; Caro's game appears to have slipped a bit lately.

Angelique is now 2-1 in WTA singles finals; she won her title at the Paris indoor tourney in February, and reached the final at Bogota in 2010. Angelique has a 23-6 singles match record in 2012.

Caroline is now 18-11 in WTA singles finals; she won at Dubai, Indian Wells, Charleston, Brussels, Copenhagen, and New Haven in 2011, but this was the first final she has reached since last August, while her ranking has slid from #1 to #6. Caro has a 17-7 singles match record this year.

Meanwhile at Barcelona, Spain, in the final of the Barcelona Ladies Open, the 2008 Palermo champion, 24 year old 7th seeded #31 (career high: #30) Sara Errani from Bologna, Italy, defeated the 2011 champ at Moscow, 22 year old 3rd seeded #18 (career high: #14) Dominika Cibulkova from Bratislava, Slovakia, 6-2, 6-2 (both ladies are shown holding the hardware after the match).

    Sara's prize is $37,000; Domi's prize is $19,000.

Sara said: "Clay courts are probably better for me than for Cibulkova. She hits very hard and is very fast, but while she can hit two winners in a row, she can also hit consecutive errors—knowing that I knew I had to keep up with her pace, keep the ball deep and be very solid, but also stay aggressive." WTA story

Dominika said: "I felt I was rushing today. Sara played very well—I tried to move her around the court but my game wasn't very accurate. But it has been a positive week, my first final of the year and in my first matches of the year on clay."

After the singles final, Sara returned to the court and won the doubles final as well, with her usual partner Roberta Vinci, defeating their compatriots Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone 6-0, 6-2.

Domi still leads Sara 4-3 in career matches. Their previous meeting was last year on an indoor hardcourt in the 2nd round at Linz, when Dominika defeated Sara 6(1)-7, 6-3, 6-1.

Sara is now 4-3 in WTA singles finals; she won this year at Acapulco, and at Palermo and Portoroz in 2007. Sara's 2012 singles match record is 21-7.

Dominika is now 1-4 in WTA singles finals; she won her title at Moscow last year, and reached the finals at Linz in 2011 and at Amelia Island and Montreal in 2008. This season Domi has a 10-10 singles match record.
