On Sunday in Azerbaijan, in the final of the Baku Cup,
the 2013 Baku champion, 19 year old 2nd seeded #35 (career high #33) Elina Svitolina from Kharkiv, Ukraine,
defeated
the 2012 Baku champion (and 2013 champ at Tashkent), 22 year old 5th seeded #40 (career high: #34) Bojana Jovanovski from Belgrade, Serbia,
6-1, 7-6(2) (Bojana is shown during her quarterfinal victory; Elina is shown holding the glassware after the match). Elina's prize is $43,000; Bojana's prize is $21,400. After Elina won the 1st set easily, both players held serve throughout the 2nd set. But Elina again dominated in the 2nd set tiebreak. Elina said: "I think we were both nervous at the start of the match, but I handled it really well. In the second set [Bojana] was trying to fight, and she's not the type of person who gives up. I've watched her fighting for every ball and for every set before and I was actually expecting this fightback. "But I was playing really well here and I'm happy I could defend my title. I'm really happy with the way I'm playing and I'm enjoying myself. I'm feeling really confident with my game right now." WTA story Bojana said: "In the first set I couldn't find any rhythm. In the second set I tried to come back and it was a little bit better, but it still wasn't enough to win the set. I had a few chances to break but didn't use my opportunities. But [Elina] played really well today and definitely deserved to win." |
Elina and Bojana had never before met on the field of combat (pro singles). Elina is now 2-0 in WTA singles finals, and has a 25-17 singles match record in 2014. Bojana is now 2-1 in WTA singles finals, and has a 14-18 singles match record this year.
In the Baku doubles final on Sunday, Heather Watson and Alexandra Panova defeated 3rd seeded Raluca Olaru and Shahar Peer, 6-2, 7-6(3).
