On Sunday at Quebec City, Canada, in the final of the Bell Challenge, the 2006 champion at Gold Coast, 26 year old 3rd seeded late entry wild card #41 (career high: #21) Lucie Safarova from Brno, Czech Republic, won her first WTA singles title in five years by defeating the 2013 champ at Memphis, 25 year old 6th seeded #68 (career high: #39) Marina Erakovic from Auckland, New Zealand, 6-4, 6-3 (Lucie is shown holding the hardware after the match).

    Lucie's prize is $40,000; Marina's prize is $20,000.

Lucie said: "It was just about a few points today, but I was more consistent with my game and more aggressive, and I think that's why I won. My strategy was to try to go to [Marina's] backhand side and just try to use my lefty shots as well as I could. I was a little bit nervous at the end because it was so long since my last WTA title. I really wanted to win the title today—so it's great I was able to do that." WTA story

Marina said: "Lucie made it very difficult for me today. She played solid and didn't let up her lead at all. And I was struggling to find my rhythm with her lefty serve and in the rallies. So I just have to take my hat off to her and move on now."

Lucie and Marina had met only once before, in 2009 on a Plexicushion hardcourt in the 2nd round of the Australian Open, when Lucie defeated Marina 6-1, 3-6, 9-7.

Lucie is now 5-7 in WTA singles finals. She had not won a title since 2008, but she did reach the Charleston final last year, where she lost to Serena Williams. Lucie has a 25-21 singles match record in 2013.

Marina is now 1-3 in WTA singles finals, and has a 27-20 singles match record this year.

On Saturday in Uzbekistan, in final of the Tashkent Open, the 2012 champ at Baku, 21 year old qualifier and top seed #58 (career high: #38) Bojana Jovanovski from Belgrade, Serbia, narrowly defeated 25 year old #88 (career high: #35) Olga Govortsova from Minsk, Belarus, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(3) (Bojana is shown after match point).

    Bojana's prize is $40,000; Olga's prize is $20,000.

Bojana said: "Anybody could have won this match today. It was a close match and all credit to Olga for an incredible battle. I'm so happy!" WTA story

Olga said: "Bojana played very well today. She was moving well and hitting the ball really hard out there. Congratulations to her for a good win."

Bojana and Olga had never before met on the field of combat.

Bojana is now 2-0 in WTA singles finals, and has a 21-19 singles match record this season.

Olga is now 0-4 in WTA singles finals, and has a 13-19 singles match record for the year.
