On Sunday in Paris, in the final of the GDF Suez Open, this year's champion in Sydney, 28-year-old top-seeded #7 (career-high: #3) Elena Dementieva of Russia (residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco), defeated the 2008 Forest Hills champion, 23-year-old unseeded #46 (and former #22) Lucie Safarova from Brno, Czech Republic, 6(6)-7, 6-1, 6-4 (Elena is shown with the new "lunatic" hardware after the match).

Elena's prize is $107,000; Lucie's is $56,000. Elena and Lucie had met only once before, on a Deco-Turf hard court in the 1st round of the 2005 US Open, when Elena won, 7-5, 6-3.

Elena said: "I'm just so happy. It was probably one of the most difficult wins in my life." AP story - WTA story

2008 Olympic gold medalist Elena is now 16-14 in WTA singles finals; she won the Auckland, Sydney and Toronto titles in 2009. Elena has a 10-1 singles match record in 2010.
Lucie is now 4-4 in WTA singles finals; she won at Forest Hills in 2008 and 2005, at Gold Coast in 2006, and at Estoril in 2005. Lucie has a 7-5 match record this year.

Meanwhile in Pattaya City, Thailand, in the final of the Pattaya Women's Open, last year's Pattaya (and Indian Wells) champion, 25-year-old top-seeded #9 (career-high: #5) Vera Zvonareva from Moscow, Russia, defeated last year's 's-Hertogenbosch champ (and a 2008 Wimbledon quarterfinalist), 32-year-old unseeded #87 (and Thai #1, WTA career-high #19) Tamarine Tanasugarn from Bangkok, Thailand, 6-4, 6-4 (Vera is shown with the ceramicware after the match).

Vera's prize is $37,000; Tammy's is $19,000. Tammy picked up an extra $5,500 by winning the doubles final, teamed with Marina Erakovic, defeating Anna Chakvetadze and Ksenia Pervak, 7-5, 6-1. Vera and Tammy had met only once before, in the 2nd round at Wimbledon in 2008, when Tammy, always at her best on chlorophyll courts, won 7-6(10), 4-6, 6-3.

Vera said: "Tammy's been playing great throughout the week. Thailand should be proud of you for having such a great player. Very tough for me to defend my title. I hope to come back next year and try again." AP story

Tammy said: "Thank you very much to all the fans here—especially the Thai fans—for cheering me on during the week. Also thanks to the Russian fans for cheering Vera on, she played so well today." WTA story

Vera is now 10-11 in WTA singles finals; after she won at Indian Wells last year she tore ankle ligaments at Charleston, and had surgery to remove scar tissue in November. Last month at the Australian Open Vera said it would still take a while before she was 100% healthy again. Vera has an 8-2 match record in 2010.
Tammy is now 3-7 in WTA singles finals; she won at 's-Hertogenbosch in 2008 and 2009, and at Hyderabad in 2004. Tammy has a 5-2 match record this year, including her 4 wins this week.

#49 Andrea Petkovic GER d #427 sr20 Katarina Srebotnik SLO 7-5, 6-2 Tue

About the injuries which kept her out of action for most of last year, Katarina said: "My achille's tendon was already healed by May, but then I injured my right shoulder, which kept me away from tennis for another five months, real bad luck, really. I'm now back to 100%, I can move and serve just like before, I have absolutely no physical problem left. Now what I need is as many matches as possible so I can get back in competition mode. I had two and a half months of preparation in a Swiss tennis academy, then three wins in Fed Cup last weekend, so everything's okay. Sure, I lost this match against Petkovic, but I have to give her credits, she played well and, most of all, managed to stay focused on important points without dropping her level. I'm feeling very positive anyway, I am playing pain-free and that is very important..."

"I have eight tournaments I can play with protected rankings, this is only the first one. I thought it was better to use the opportunity here in Europe and not in Australia, where the Australian Open would have come too early after my comeback. By choosing the Open GDF SUEZ and then Dubai, Indian Well and other tournments and that way, the Grand Slam I can enter with my protected ranking, which is the French Open, will be the last in the series." postmatch interview

Ekaterina and Sesil following forehand and backhand

The win put 2005 French Open quarterfinalist Sesil in her first ever WTA semifinal. Sesil was 15 when she reached the quarters at Roland Garros; the following January she was suspended for two years for alleged use of the steroid nalderone. Sesil denied the allegation and appealed the decision but lost the appeal; the fact that her father is a former Bulgarian Olympic rower probably did not help her case. Upon returning to play in 2008 Sesil quickly won two ITF titles, but had struggled since then.
