On Sunday in Moscow, Russia, in the final of the Kremlin Cup, this year's champion at Stanford, 20-year-old 2nd-seeded #10 (career-high: #6) Victoria Azarenka of Belarus (residence: Scottsdale, Arizona) defeated a local resident (and her current doubles partner) the 2008 champion at Estoril, Barcelona, and Seoul, 23-year-old 6th-seeded #24 (career-high: #20) Maria Kirilenko of Russia, 6-3, 6-4 (Vika is shown holding the Kremlin Cup after the match).

    Victoria's prize is $157,427; Maria's prize is $85,026.

Victoria said: "We showed some excellent tennis. I hope the crowd enjoyed it. Maria played really well and had a lot of motivation for her hometown final. The crowd was obviously behind her, but that just motivated me more...
"It was really tough to win the second set as Maria started pretty good, dominating the play completely. I tried hard to stay in the match fighting for every point and it paid off. ... I'm really happy to win here on my third attempt." WTA story - AP story

Maria said: "I really wanted to win this tournament but Vika was better than me today. It's nice to finish the year with a great final. It gives me a desire to work harder and get better. I felt so much support from the crowd and it helped me all week to play well. I'm happy that from tomorrow I can put my racquets and tennis clothes away for a couple of weeks!"

Vika and Masha are now tied at 2-2 in career matches. Victoria also won the last time they met, in August on a Deco-Turf hardcourt in the 2nd round at Montreal, 6-4, 6-1.

Victoria is now 5-6 in WTA singles finals. She won her first three titles last year; this year she defeated Maria Sharapova in the Stanford final, and also reached the finals at Duabai, where she lost to Venus Williams, and at Eastbourne, where she lost to Ekaterina Makarova. Vika has a 41-18 singles match record in 2010.

Maria is now 5-4 in WTA singles finals; she won in Estoril, Barcelona, and Seoul in 2008, but this is the first final she has reached since Barcelona last year. Maria has a 37-23 singles match record for the season.

On Sunday in Luxembourg, in the final of the BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open, last year's Barcelona champion, 26-year-old #46 (career-high: #37) Roberta Vinci from Taranto, Italy, defeated this year's champ at Bad Gastein, Austria, 21-year-old 8th-seeded #43 (career-high: #41) Julia Goerges from Bad Oldesloe, Germany, 6-3, 6-4 (Roberta is shown with the, uh, "art object" trophy after the match).

    Roberta's prize is $37,000; Julia's prize is $19,000.

Roberta said: "Julia is a very good player, but I don't think today was her best day. The turning point for me this week was my second round match, when I won 7-6 in the third set. After that I knew I could go far, maybe the semis.
"Today I tried to stay focused on every point, especially on my service games... Now I'm going home for a week and then to the Fed Cup final." WTA story

Julia said: "I was pretty tired today. Roberta played some really good tennis, and I just wasn't able to make it."

Roberta and Julia had never before met on the field of combat.

Roberta is now 3-1 in WTA singles finals; she won her first title in Bogota in 2007. Roberta has a 38-23 singles match record this year.
Julia is now 1-1 in WTA singles finals; she won the Bad Gastein title earlier this year. Julia has a 34-25 singles match record in 2010.

Zarina defeated #48 Gisela Dulko in the 1st round on Tuesday, 6-3, 6(1)-7, 7-6(5). Her best win prior to this week was over then #63 Petra Kvitova in the 2nd round in Prague last year, 6-4, 6-2.

Zarina said: "I had nothing to lose. I just relaxed and played my best tennis." AP story

Jelena has been ill all week (which is clearly visible in photos of her at the press hour on Monday) and has been taking antibiotics.

Jelena said: "I was suffering on the court but I really wanted to be out there and didn't want to retire. I finished as well as I could, but obviously it was tough for me to focus on my tennis."

About next week's WTA Championships, which begin in Qatar on Tuesday, Jelena said: "Doha is a different type of tournament. You can lose a match and still win the whole tournament. So anything can happen, but for me the biggest concern is being healthy. I will see the doctors, take some blood tests and take some more medicine. We will see what happens and hopefully I can be ready in time."

The win gave Victoria the points she needed to clinch the last opening in the WTA Championships next week in Doha, Qatar (Serena Williams has withdrawn due to the reinjury of her right foot nine days ago).

Victoria said: "Won my match. It was long and really tough. Andrea is improved a lot and playing really good tennis. I'm happy I could turn it around though and finish strong. I also got into Doha. Feel sorry for Serena to pull out! I hope she can finally recover for next year." Victoria Azarenka at Twitter

"I like the momentum I have right now. My next match will be a huge motivator as I have never beaten María José [Martinez Sanchez] before." WTA story

Alisa said: "Every game was tight. Vika was playing great. She qualified for Doha this week and the pressure wasn't there anymore. She enjoyed the match and played freely. I did as much as I could but it wasn't easy to stay at my best the whole match. I made some mistakes on important points."
