On Sunday in Guangzhou, China, in the final of the International Women's Open, 23-year-old top-seeded #60 (career-high: #55) Jarmila (Gajdosova) Groth from Sydney, Australia, won her first WTA singles title by defeating 22-year-old #78 (career-high: #59) Alla Kudryavtseva from Moscow, Russia, 6-1, 6-4 (Jarmila is shown with the ceramicware after the match). Jarmila's prize is $37,000; Alla's is $19,000. Jarmila said: "I played pretty well in most of my matches this week. I was very consistent and served well, which helped me put a lot of pressure on my opponent to hold serve. I didn't give a lot of chances to my opponents and was able to take mine to close them out." WTA story Alla said: "I'm a bit disappointed but she played great tennis throughout the week so congratulations to her. I'm really happy with the overall experience." Jarmila and Alla had met twice before, but never in a WTA main draw singles match. Jarmila defeated Alla on grass in an ITF tourney in 2005, and Alla defeated Jarmila on a Plexipave hardcourt in qualifying at Indian Wells in 2008. Jarmila was playing in her first WTA singles final; she has won 12 ITF singles titles and 1 WTA doubles title. Jarmila's singles match record this year is 43-18. Alla was also playing in her first WTA singles final; she has won one ITF singles title and 2 WTA doubles titles. Alla is 26-24 in singles this season. On Sunday in Quebec City, Canada, in the final of the Bell Challenge, 19-year-old qualifier #196 (career high: #35) Tamira Paszek from Dornbirn, Austria, defeated 24-year-old #76 (career high: #37) Bethanie Mattek-Sands from Miami, Florida, 7-6(6), 2-6, 7-5 (Tamira is shown at the Linz, Austria, players party in 2008). |
Tamira's prize for winning 8 consecutive matches in 9 days (for the second time in her career) is $37,000; Bethanie's prize is $19,000.
Tamira's ranking fell while she was sidetracked last year by low back and left foot injuries. Tamira said: "It's overwhelming. I'm extremely happy... I want to thank my family and friends for supporting me during tough times last year. I always believed I could come back... [Today] in the end it was so even, it was just who fought the most. We played some great tennis." WTA story
Bethanie said: "Tamira is a tough player. She was injured for a little bit but obviously playing qualifying here and making it all the way to the final, she has been playing really well."
Tamira and Bethanie had never before met on the field of combat. Tamira is now 2-1 in WTA singles finals; she also went through qualifying to won the Portoroz title in 1996 at the age of 15, and reached the Bali final in 2008, when she lost to Patty Schnyder. Her singles match record for 2010, including 8 wins this week, is 31-20.
Bethanie is now 0-2 in WTA singles finals; she also reached the Quebec City final in 2008, when she lost to Nadia Petrova. Her singles match record this season is 38-18.
