    On Saturday at Yale University, in the final of the Connecticut Open, the 2014 & 2012 New Haven champion (and 2014 Wimbledon champ), 25 year old 2nd (top) seeded #4 (career high: #2) Petra Kvitova from Fulnek, Czech Republic, defeated the 2015 champion at Doha (and French Open finalist), 28 year old 4th seeded #6 (career high: #6) Lucie Safarova from Brno, Czech Republic, 6(6)-7, 6-2, 6-2 (Lucie is shown during the match; Petra is shown holding the glassware afterward).

    Petra's prize is $120,000; Lucie's prize is $64,000.

    Petra said: "In the important moments, I really served well."

    Lucie said: "I made a couple of mistakes, and [Petra] just took the opportunity."

    Petra now leads Lucie 7-0 in career matches. Their previous meeting was last year on a chlorophyll court in the semifinals of The Championships at Wimbledon, when Petra defeated Lucie 7-6(6), 6-1.

    Petra is now 17-5 in WTA singles finals; she has a 30-10 singles match record this season. Lucie is now 6-9 in WTA singles finals. Her singles match record in 2015 is 31-16.

    Petra will play qualifier #126 Laura Siegemund of Germany in the 1st round of the US Open on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday in the 1st round at Flushing Meadows, Lucie will play #46 Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine (whom Lucie defeated in the semifinals at New Haven on Friday.)

    After winning the 1st set, Lucie took a double break lead in the 2nd. But Lesia broke back twice, and took the set to a tiebreaker. Lucie said: "I had to go back to bascis to calm myself down. I just had to start to play more aggressive and go for the shots." WTA story
