  Charleston & Bogota 2014

On Sunday at Charleston, in the final of the Family Circle Cup, the 2011 champion at Strasbourg, 26 year old 14th seeded #37 (career high: #9) Andrea Petkovic from Darmstadt, Germany, defeated 20 year old #76 (career high: #61) Jana Cepelova from Kosice, Slovakia, 7-5, 6-2 (Andrea is shown making friends with the glassware after the match).

    Andrea's prize is $120,000, Jana's prize is $64,000.

In the 1st set, Andrea took a 3-0 two-break lead, but Jana then won the next four games. Jana reached a set point, which she failed to convert. In the 2nd set, Andrea dominated, reaching 5-0 before Jana got on the scoreboard.

Andrea said: "When I was down facing set point, I just told myself, 'You gotta let loose and you gotta relax a little bit because otherwise you're not going to win this match. And so I relaxed, and I started hitting the ball harder and deeper and I started moving and serving better as well. That's just how it is sometimes. You just relax and all of a sudden things come together." WTA story

Jana defeated #1 Serena Williams on her way to the final. At the trophy ceremony, Andrea said: "First of all I want to congratulate Jana for an amazing week... You did this all by yourself, no coach, nobody here with you... I'm just so impressed."

Petko and Jana had never before met on the field of combat.

Andrea is now 3-5 in previous WTA singles finals. This is her first Premier title, her previous wins coming at Bad Gastein and Strasbourg. Andrea now has a 12-7 singles match record this season.

Jana was playing in her first WTA singles final. She has a 13-9 singles match record in 2014.

On Sunday at Bogota, in the final of the Claro Open Colsanitas, 20 year old 5th seeded #71 (career high: #70) Caroline Garcia from Lyon, France, won her first WTA singles title by defeating the 2013 Bogota champion, 29 year old top seeded #8 (and former #1) Jelena Jankovic of Serbia (residence: Dubai, United Arab Emirates), 6-3, 6-4 (Caroline is shown after match point).

Caroline's prize is $43,000; Jelena's prize is $21,400. Jelena still leads Caroline 2-1 in career matches. Their previous meeting was last year on green clay in the 2nd round at Charleston, when Jelena defeated Caroline 5-7, 7-6(10), 6-3.

Caroline said: "I'm very happy to win my first WTA title. It was a good week for me. It's never easy playing with the altitude. It's hard to adapt, and my level was going up and down throughout the week. But I think I adjusted well and I probably played my best match of the week today in the final.

"I'm also really happy I was able to beat Jelena in the final. She's a really nice girl and a great player. She was the #1 player in the world, and I had to play the best I could today to beat her. To win a WTA title is always a goal. Today is the best day I could imagine." WTA story

Caroline was playing in her first WTA singles final. She has an 11-8 singles match record this season.

Jelena is now 13-19 in WTA singles finals, and has a 20-9 singles match record in 2014.
