On Saturday at Florianopolis, in the final of the Brasil Tennis Cup,
last week's finalist at Rio (and 2005 champ at Portoroz & 's-Hertogenbosch), 32 year old 3rd seeded #35 (career high: #21) Klara (Koukalova) Zakopalova from Prague, Czech Republic,
defeated
the 2014 champion at Hobart, Tasmania, 20 year old 2nd seeded #34 (career high: #38) Garbine Muguruza from Barcelona, Spain
4-6, 7-5, 6-0 (Klara is shown holding the glassware after the match). Klara's prize is $43,000; Garbine's prize is $21,400. It is Klara's first title since 2005. Klara said: "I was playing well in the first set but [Garbine] was just playing a little bit better, but in the second set she was just playing amazing. But then maybe she started making a few mistakes and I was a little bit more patient. After I won the second set I told myself that anything could happen. "I was losing the whole match, but anything can happen in a final. I think I got a little bit lucky here and there and I'm very happy I could make it through and win the third set, and win the title." WTA story Klara now leads Garbine 2-1 in career matches. Their previous meeting was early this year on a Plexicushion hardcourt in the final at Hobart, Tasmania, when Garbine defeated Klara 6-4, 6-0. Klara is now 3-12 in WTA singles finals. She has a 18-7 singles match record this season. Garbine is now 1-1 in WTA singles finals. She has a 17-4 singles match record in 2014. |
On Saturday at Acapulco, in the final of the Abierto Mexicano, the 2014 Australian Open finalist (and 2013 champion at Stanford), 24 year old top seeded #13 (career high: #12) Dominika Cibulkova from Bratislava, Slovakia, defeated 21 year old #71 (career high: #24) Christina McHale from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 (Domi is shown en sombrero, holding the ballware after the match).
Dominika's prize is $43,000; Christina's prize is $21,400.
Dominika said: "I expected a really tough match and this was over my expectations. I have to say, it was an extremely tough match. [Christina's] defense was amazing today. We had so many long rallies and the match was so up and down, but I was fighting for every point and I'm really happy I could win this." WTA story
Christina said: "I was happy with the way I fought today. I think Dominika played really well today. I was just trying to stay with her. But hopefully there will be more finals to come for me."
Domi leads Christina 3-0 in career matches. Their previous meeting was in 2012 on red clay in the 1st round at Brussels, when Domi defeated Christina 7-6(1), 6-1.
