On Sunday at Osaka, Japan, in the final of the Japan Women's Open, the 2013 champ at Osaka and Carlsbad (and the 2011 US Open champion), 30 year old top seeded #21 (career high: #4) Samantha Stosur from Gold Coast, Australia, defeated 20 year old 5th seeded #39 (career high: #37) Zarina Diyas from Almaty, Kazakhstan, 7-6(7), 6-3 (photo shown).

    Samantha's prize is $43,000; Zarina's prize is $21,400.

Samantha said: "It's great to win a title... Zarina's quite a good player... and I really had to play some good tennis to beat her today." WTA story

Samantha and Zarina had never before met on the field of combat.

Samantha is now 6-14 in previous WTA singles finals, three of her six titles have been won at Osaka. She has a 33-24 singles match record in 2014.

Zarina was playing in her first WTA singles final. She has a 42-22 singles match record this season.

On Sunday at Tianjin, China, in the final of the Tianjin Open, 24 year old 6th seeded #60 (career high: #43) Alison Riske from Hilton Head, South Carolina, defeated 17 year old 3rd seeded #34 (career high: #33) Belinda Bencic from Flawil, Switzerland, 6-3, 6-4 (photo shown).

    Alison's prize is $43,000; Belinda's prize is $21,400.

Alison said: "It's a huge accomplishment for me to win my first WTA title. And I was here by myself, which made it even more special, just to know that I was able to do it by myself." WTA story

Belinda and Alison were also meeting for the first time in pro singles.

Alison was playing in her first WTA singles final. Her singles match record this year is 23-23.

Belinda was also playing in her first WTA singles final. Her 2014 singles match record is 40-19.

On Sunday at Linz, Austria, in the final of the Generali Ladies, the 2014 Seoul champion, 22 year old 7th seeded #29 (career high: #29) Karolina Pliskova from Louny, Czech Republic, defeated the 2014 finalist at Katowice, 20 year old #42 (career high: #37) Camila Giorgi of Italy (residence: France), 6(4)-7, 6-3, 7-6(4) (photo shown).

    Karolina's prize is $43,000; Camila's prize is $21,400.

Karolina led 5-1 in the 3rd set, then Camila won the next five games, and reached a match point before Karolina recovered to reach the tiebreaker.

Karolina said: "It could have been a little easier, but I'm still happy I won the title. After I was 5-1 up and [Camila] came back and had match point, I was already thinking I would lose, and that I would cry afterwards! But she was playing so well in that part of the third set... Before the match I knew it would be hard because she hadn't lost a set all week." WTA story

Karolina and Camila had met only once before, earlier this year on a Deco-Turf hardcourt in qualifying at Dubai, when Karolina defeated Camila 7-5, 6-2.

Karolina is now 3-3 in WTA singles finals. Her 2014 singles match record is 54-27.

Camila is now 0-2 in WTA singles finals. She has a 31-23 singles match record this year.

Samantha said: "I have to use my experience, and maybe everything I've learnt over the years, to beat these younger players. When I was in that position playing the older players, I'd feel I had nothing to lose. Your ranking's not as good, you're younger, you're not expected to win, so you go out there and really go for it. If you win that's fantastic, and if you lose you weren't expected to win anyway.
"Now I have to make sure I'm playing my best tennis against anyone. Everyone's got the ability to beat anyone. You can't take anything for granted, even when your opponent is 20 or 21 years old." WTA story
